Senior faculty SHOULD NOT bully grad students. The best advice I can give to grad students is to avoid jerks & focus on cultivating positive relationships with peers and senior faculty. Having senior mentors invested in your success can have a profound affect on your career. 1/3
In academia, a positive support community is incredibly valuable and you have to build it yourself. That’s built up over time through having positive interactions with others in the field. This applies to tenured faculty as well. Today’s grad student is tomorrow’s peer. 2/3
So much of academia is based on reciprocity, so the more positivity you put out to others the more often it is returned to you. I’ve had great role models in my department like @Victor_Asal and @NovkovJulie — be like them. 3/3
