I’ve always loved farming, and my home, I’m incredibly grateful to have the opportunity of farming here. As I’ve mentioned, it’s not always been simple, “You weren’t meant to be the farmer,” truly brave words which started our succession journey.
Women have always been an integral part of Scottish agriculture, supporting their families, caring for stock, looking after the farm office, driving machinery. We are just as capable. But, we are often undervalued, overlooked, downplayed or simply unseen.
Had my brother wanted to farm, my situation would have been different. Traditional views have been holding back our industry, but things have and are changing for the better. In 2019 the Women in Agriculture Taskforce published its final report, tough reading for some.
As Taskforce Co-Chair @armadalefarm states, ‘It’s not about giving women special treatment or an advantage over men, it’s very simply about levelling the field.’
There are some fantastic women in agriculture on social media, more than I ever appreciated before I joined Twitter. Now we see @redshepherdess on Countryfile, and @armadalefarm on #ThisFarmingLife. You can’t be what you can’t see.
I hope my girls will someday farm here, but most importantly, they’ll have the option, and their industry will be better for it.
