Coney Island, Brooklyn (1975). Mark Twain JHS was ordered to be integrated due to its student pop being over 80% Black/Puerto Rican when all the other middle schools in the district were predominantly white. White students and mothers voice their opinions on the ruling.
Part II. 14% of Mark Twain's students were reading at grade level. Students were placed in more vocational and phys ed classes. The more advanced classes at the school were populated almost entirely by whites, even tho they make up <20% of the JHS. Black parents w commentary.
Part III. In response to the ruling, the school board made Mark Twain a Gifted & Talented JHS and transferred all advanced courses in the district to the school. No whites would be forcibly bused, but Black kids would be forcibly bused to other schools. Parents still objected.
