Working back through McKenzie’s start... both hits allowed were on first pitches. Castro HR on a change, Candelario double on a heater.

First pitches last night:
14 FB
2 CH
1 SL
4 CB

He introduced the first pitch curve AFTER the Castro HR and leaned on it periodically.
This was readily apparent in these adjustments.

The other thing I would point out:

Because of this preparation, CLE developed pitchers never *look* overwhelmed. Mentally, they are ready to attack.

Bieber, Civale, Plesac, etc. Was obvious with McKenzie last night, too. https://twitter.com/b_gumbo30/status/1297339790149525504
Jim hits the nail on an important note here...

Because of McKenzie’s frame/release point/deception, his 94-95 actually plays 95-96.

This is key because league-wide effectiveness depends a lot on a mph here and there.

2019 League wOBA vs 94-95mph
0.344
vs 95-96
0.331 https://twitter.com/jimpeteehc/status/1297315577405505537
Spin rate, perceived velocity, command, plus curve, passable change/slider.

It’s hard to check the excitement with McKenzie. Cleveland has made stars out of guys with raw tools that don’t come close to this, so let’s see what’s in this bag.
