I was inspired by the song ”dreams” by nuages. I wanted to make an edit with a story for the song using seventeen’s music videos and more to match the lyrics. I wanted to create something that’s kind of like an au in an edit form. Here’s how the story goes:
Seventeen is given the ability to dream any dream they wanted to dream. In those dreams, they are able to create their own fantasy world and they have the control to do anything they want within those dreams. They can begin and end the dream however and whenever they want.
The dreams become their reality escape. Eventually they get addicted to their own creation, their own fantasy world and the freedom and the happiness they have in it. And as they get more adventurous and the dreams get more complex, they lose track of what’s real and what's not.
They lose the ability to distinguish dreams from reality, which leads them to think they’re in control of their dreams, when in reality they’re not. They get stuck inside of the dream world without even noticing it.
It takes time until finally one of them realizes that none of the happiness they’re feeling is real, not even the pillow fights in their own bedroom. All of it was just dreaming. As he realizes this, he gets control over their dreams again.
He decides to make it stop in hopes of escaping this limbo they got stuck in. And it works. They finally awaken from the illusion of happiness they created for themselves.
But when this reality escape, this fantasy world seventeen created, is taken away from them, everything starts to feel grey. Nothing in the real world feels like anything after living in their own world for so long.
Their lives are filled with numbness and loneliness. They crave the rush of excitement they felt in their dreams.
As there is no way for seventeen to get the ability of dreams in control back, they’re forced to look at what’s around them in the real world rather than yearning for what they had before. They start to realize that beauty exists in the real world too.
It’s in the little things of daily life and within themselves and the people around them. They realize that not everything can be done in the dream world, despite thinking that they were able to have ”every kind of pleasure” when dreaming. Running is one of these things.
And so they start running. They run to each other, amazed and enlightened by this new realization. They turn their backs to their past, the ability to control their dreams that they got so addicted to. And when they do that, everything starts to feel better.
The world turns brighter again. They start living for the little moments: sunsets, sunrises, good food, swimming, city lights.. the list goes on. They realize that happiness exists all around them, not in a world that’s made up.
And to distinguish this happiness from what they had before, they run. They keep running to remind themselves that they’re no longer living in a world that doesn’t exist.
The windmills represent the beauty of the real world. It was all there all this time, but they hadn’t realized it before because they wanted to hold onto their fantasy world.
By truly awakening and letting go of what they had, they find peace and true happiness. The only thing they need to feel that happiness is each other. As long as they’re together, world will never turn grey again, and the beauty right in front of their eyes is theirs.
