One of the dumbest arguments you could come across in discussions regarding realism in gaming is “it’s just a gaaaame bro!”. Here I thought magic mushrooms that instantly make you bigger do exist!
When people criticize an unrealistic aspect of a game or its story it doesn’t mean they believe it, that criticism comes for the sake of immersion and continuity. Two very important elements for a game to be engaging and worthwhile.
If I am to accept they shouldn’t have realistic limitations to their story then why bother having one at all? Any reason for explanation and discovery would be gone. It’s satisfying when devs focus on details and even tying the lore and story to the core gameplay mechanics.
Those games do still exist, but why are they becoming rare than they used to be? It’s frustrating because without this criticism devs would be encouraged to be lazy and creat uninspired bad content. The growing commercial success of the industry doesn’t help either.
Obviously this thread only applies to games where the story is important and meant to be taken seriously and not Mario. However, it does apply to other entertainment mediums as well.
I don’t usually do threads but I kept seeing this argument a lot lately and just started typing. I still have much to write about it, I’ll just leave it at that.
