I suppose if people are going to insist that the Mayor of London is responsible for every bridge in the city we might ask why that isn't the case already.

Bridges inevitably go between boroughs, and even bridges maintained by City of London need TfL support for works to happen.
So, if the government fancies fronting up the £140m for Hammersmith Bridge, why not make it £250m and use the spare cash to make sure everything's ready for global warming, including enabling the modal shift we need with more walking and cycling capacity.
Or we can keep grumping as crucial links in city fall apart.
