Someone pointed out that most ND advocacy is Autism/ADHD so I am going to start a dyscalculia series

Dyscalculia is hard to advocate for. People don't seem to care if you struggle with math. All I get is "🤷‍♀️I'm bad at math too"or "You just need to *practice*" 1/8
It is also VERY hard to speak openly about dyscalculia when you want to be in STEM. Whenever anyone in STEM hears I am dyscalculic they immediately tell me I cannot be successful in STEM. They assume if I do continue, I will be a liability 2/8
In a lot of ways dyscalculia has impacted my life more than autism, ADHD, APD, or TBI have. I was seen as the bright but lazy student who didn't apply themselves in elem/middle/HS school. 3/8
My GPA suffered due to unaccommodated dyscalculia which meant I didn't get my bachelors at a 'normal' age. I have tried very hard all my life to learn math, but it was only until I had accommodations that I started to succeed. 4/8
However, people assume that the only reason I am succeeding is my extra time on tests or ability to use a calculator. The truth is I spend 10+ hours a week w/a special tutor. I fight hard. Given all the time in the world not everyone can get A's on calculus tests like I have 5/8
Being successful with a learning disability is mostly learning how to accommodate it. For dyscalculia is it mostly learning, by working with my tutor, what mistakes I make & how to avoid them. This mostly means I have to check & recheck every single step. 6/8
Most my errors are w/basic math vs complex math. I find it easier to navigate calculus than algebra. I find algebra easier than subtraction. I can only understand fractions w/a lot of effort & in order to do so, all the numbers (even whole) must be written in fraction form 7/8
I find it odd when ppl ask how I can be a scientist w/a math disability. In STEM accuracy is key & since I know I struggle w/it I ALWAYS have someone check my work. I will be less likely to make errors *due* to dyscalculia. I'm not weaker because I'm dyscalculic, I'm stronger.8/8
