Let’s talk about Sab Rajan ke Raja Shri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj’s bani in Dasam Garanth Sahib.

This is another long thread but it answers some questions that every Sikh must know answers to, so grab a cup of coffee and lets roll.

#Sikhi #SikhHistory
Why didn’t Guru Sahib add Dasam Bani in SGGS?

SGGS has bani of Almighty & doesn’t talk about praise of mortals & also doesn’t give you any idea of historical events. Dasam talks about birth, childhood, battles fought by Guru and hence is more of Guru’s story. Guru Sahib writes
Why did Guru Sahib write his own katha?

For those who know Dasam has parts,
1. Guru talks about Almighty~ Akal Ustat
2. Guru talks about battles & his life - Bachitar Natak
3. Guru talks about Hindu gods- Chaubis avtaar.
The answer to why Guru wrote his own Katha is that Guru Sahib was a visionary & did not want anyone to refer to Him as an Almighty in Dasam. There were of course brilliant poets in Guru Darbar like Bhai Nand Lal who could have done the job for Guru but Guru Sahib knew prophecy as
Guru Sahib makes it very very clear in Dasam that no one should call him ‘Almighty’.

‘Jo hum ko Parmeshwar uchrey,
teh sab narak kund main parehe’

Meaning those who call me or appropriate me as an Alnighty will suffer in hell.

Then what does Guru Sahib call himself as-
‘Moko daaa tavan ka jaano, ya main bhed na ranch pachano, main hô Param purakh ko Daaso, Dekhan aayo jagat tamaso’

Guru Sahib is very clear that He is just a human being who is slave of Waheguru and has come with a message for humankind.

There is no praise of Guru in Dasam.
Why did Guru Sahib write about Hindu gods?

This has been point of debate in Sikh circles who don’t agree with Panth & believe that Guru Sahib couldn’t have written about Hindu gods and avtaars. Well the truth is that Guru Sahib did write about 24 avtaars.

But
Guru Sahib at the start of Chaubis avtaar states as-
‘Dasam katha Bhagaut ki bhaakha kari’

‘Bhaakha’ term means~ Teeka.

Guru Sahib says that I am merely translating the works. This is the point that most Sikhs miss when they level charges against people who read Dasam.
Guru Sahib wrote 24 avtaar because in those times, Sanskrit was the language of Brahmins & no one else was allowed to read it or learn it. Guru Sahib did not want his Sikhs to be deprived of the great knowledge about the avtaars. The stories of which would never be known to sikhs
Guru Sahib wanted Sikhs to learn about avtaars because it serves as a key to learn SGGS. SGGS has mentions of Ram, Krishna etc. How in the world are you supposed to know who Ram was If you don’t read Ramavtaar? Or how would you know who Krishan was If you don’t read Krishanavtaar
Sure if you want to ask a Brahmin to tell you the story & then you plan to go read SGGS but this is not what Guru wanted. Guru wanted his Sikhs to have first hand knowledge of who these avtaars were. I don’t see it wrong to study about them. Sikhs need to get it that Dasam is key
This said, it is equally important to not cross the line and appropriate avtaars as Waheguru.

Guru Sahib after finishing Krishan avtaar writes

‘Main na ganeshe pritham manao
Kishan Bishan kabhô nahi dheyao
Kaam sune pechchan na tin seyo
liv laagi mori pag en seyo’
Meaning that I don’t pray to Ganesh as prime God, neither I pray to Krishna. My identity is not defined by them & neither am I their devotee.

Sikhs who don’t read Dasam come up with ‘statements’ like ‘Bro eh RSS di chaal aa’

Guru has himself said that there is no fuss on it.
Similarly when Guru Sahib finishes Ram avtaar, He writes,

Paae gahe jab te tumre tab
te-ko-oo aankh tere nahi aanyo

Oh God since I have fallen on your feet, I don’t care for anybody else. Since I have taken refuge in your home, I don’t worship anyone else.
‘Raam raheem puraan kuraan
anek kahai mat ek na maanyo

I do not believe in the religious ways preached by various greats of other religions like Ram, Mohammad, Puran or Quran.

This should be statement enough from Guru that there is nothing wrong in reading Ramavtaar.
Guru Sahib tells us that Krishnavtaar is essential to read because it is battle between adharam and dharm and Krishna tells us how to fight the battle of Dharm. Imagine Guru in today’s era, wouldn’t Guru Sahib have used world war 1 as an example of war? Guru Sahib wanted learning
Guru Sahib writes this (in pic) at the end of Krishanavtaar and openly claims that it is a translation and mere translation but this said I am more pumped to fight for righteousness (Dharm) after reading and translating Krishna.

What’s stopping modern day Sikhs from being that?
But bro Guru Sahib allegedly wrote Chandi di vaar as well?

No doubts about it. Guru Sahib did write it and what a masterpiece it is. If Chandi di vaar doesn’t pump you up, are you even a human? It is the adrenaline rush for Sikhs to read how Durga mata fights for righteousness
Again! There is no praise for Mata there. Some people have argued that ‘Bhagauti’ is used to refer to Mata but it is false, Bhagauti refers to 🗡 sword. Consider this- If Bhagauti means Durga, this like makes no sense for Durga can’t lift Durga right?

Chandi di vaar is Gold.
It is one among 52 hukums of Guru Sahib to memorise Chandi di Vaar. Those who haven’t watched the video or don’t know about it should definitely watch the video or listen to the bani. For me personally, Chandi di vaar is always something that puts me in Bir-Ras.
The lamest question that I’ve come across is
RSS has corrupted Dasam Garanth so we shouldn’t read it.

FALSE
1. There is no Hindu prayer in Dasam. Even if we agree for the argument sake that they made a man sit to write it for us, why didn’t he include a Hindu prayer? He could?
2. Dasam criticises lot of practices of Hindus. Why wouldn’t the Alledged org take that out while changing it?

3. Only Brahmin knows how to read his books & as such only he can alter Dasam, why wouldn’t he change the stories of Chaubis avtaar as they are put by Guru?
Please understand that there are efforts within the Panth to keep Sikhs away from the knowledge. There is NOONE trying to do anything to our Bani. Stop being lethargic and go read Dasam Garanth for a change. Read it yourself before forming opinions which stem from insecurity
Should we then matha tek (bow in reverence) to Dasam Garanth?

We will have to take a look at it historically.
We find that Dasam is in Prakash with SGGS at slightly lower height of palki.
To answer the Matha-Tek Question I want you to ask yourself a question-
Who do you matha-tek when you bow to SGGS? Is it the shabd or the book?

If your answer is Shabd, read on. Since you do understand Sikhi, you should know that Dasam contains Amrit Bani which is used to prepare Amrit, like Jaap Sahib. Would you bow to Jaap Sahib? Yes! There it is
Dasam Garanth is in Prakash in Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib. Notice the small Paalki Sahib for Dasam Garanth.

I also think Sikhs shouldn’t hesitate to ask Nihung Singhs on how they manage to keep SGGS & Dasam. Nihungs say that SGGS is the head while Dasam’s form the arms.
I would like to conclude using Bhai Jagraj Ji’s statement that “It is Guru’s Mukhwaak & should be respected. Wouldn’t you respect Guru’s sandal if you found it somewhere? What would you do with it? Would you say it is manmat?
Think about it! That’s sandal I’m talking about & this is Guru Sahib’s bani in pure form.”

It is not the purpose of Sikh to question Guru. ‘Shanka’ on Guru is equal to ‘Nindya’ of Guru.

I end it with the words that you will always be safe respecting Dasam.
What is the probability of Dasam being Guru’s own bani with no alteration?-95-99%
Would you like to be Guru Nindak for 0-5%? The choice is yours.

The thread is open for healthy debate between Sikhs educated on matter. No Dasam slander will be allowed on TL.
