Saturday evening tropical thread on #Marco and #Laura: This is going to be an unusual situation that you need to be prepared for. Since the beginning I've thought Laura would end up stronger and still do. But there are several issues here to talk about over the next week.
Good news with Laura is it's far enough out to where you can still get some track changes. However models coming into better agreement lately. I think it makes landfall at least close enough to areas impacted by Marco to be a big issue. I expect Marco to be lower on the impact
scale in the world of tropical systems to our area. Coastal flooding for sure outside levee system. 3-6 feet with some isolated higher spots, especially Terrebonne Bay and east. Inland heavy rain with tropical storm force winds means power outage potential, minor wind damage.
If this was the only storm then we get to next week with some cleanup and play on. But it's not. And the second one looks like it could be stronger. I think Laura could be Cat 2 at landfall, and frankly 3 not out of the question. On its own the storm could cause big issues.
But it's coming on the heels of another storm. So the ground is fairly saturated, the coast has high water levels, and the power is out in spots. So now we add on potential significant impacts to these conditions. Enhanced coastal flooding, more rain and stronger winds which
would knock out more power and for a longer time since Marco cleanup can't begin until Laura is gone. Regardless of Laura strength, don't underestimate the impacts a saturated ground has with a land-falling system. Think Isaac. Some indications Marco moves west a bit along coast
Which would prolong some rain for certain areas. BOTTOM LINE: If you are outside the levee system, move your stuff to higher ground. I'd evacuate those areas. Rest of us inland, have supplies for several days. This could be an abnormally extended period without power and cleanup.
Be prepared for the potential of now power for a week or more in some spots if Laura does strengthen significantly in the later stages.
