what if "peace" is not wholly written from taylor's persepctive? A VERY IMPORTANT THREAD
I believe the verses are written from Taylor's perspective about her relationship with Joe. She writes about how their relationship has matured over the years. ex) "cruel summer" => "suddenly this summer it's clear"
She also writes about how "danger" is near. She is afraid that her life in the spotlight (and her fight over her music) will never give them peace "No, I could never give you peace."
So I believe (this is just a theory!) that the chorus is written from Joe's perspective. HERE WE GO.
First, "I'm a fire and I'll keep your brittle heart warm" is a reference to "Call it What you Want To," in which Taylor says "he built a fire just to keep me warm." So it is JOE telling TAYLOR that he will keep her safe.
"If your cascade, ocean wave blues come" references "Cruel Summer," in which TAYLOR says "it's blue, the feeling I've got." She has the blues, and Joe promises he will be with her through it all.
"All these people think love's for show / But I would die for you in secret," references how people might think their relationship is fake, but Joe declares that he will fight for her, even if no one knows what they're going through.
"The devil's in the details" => Joe is referencing how Taylor called him a "devil" in Cruel Summer (he looks up grinning like a devil)
"But you've got a friend in me" => "It's nice to have a friend." Joe is telling Taylor that he will be her best friend (!!!)
"Would it be enough if I never gave you peace?"
This is JOE asking TAYLOR, "Would it be enough even if I can't protect you from everything?" Because he knows he can't protect her from all the paparazzi & he can't control what will happen to her music.
So this song is actually a BEAUTIFUL DUET between Joe and Taylor. It's each of them being very vulnerable and very trusting of each other. And this is why peace is one of the best songs on #folklore . /end
Addendum: And there’s a long pause between the verses and the chorus and it’s THE SILENCE THAT ONLY COMES WHEN TWO PEOPLE UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER. So clearly it’s TWO PEOPLE TALKING in this song
