0 firefighter injuries now, the previous injuries were minor enough that they are not reportable

115 structures confirmed destroyed

1349 personnel
Good day today!

North zone is not progressing much and is effectively static. YAY! Loma MAr, Pescadero, La Honda looking good. Coastal communities incl Davenport all good

South side fire break is good, backup contingency line is finished from hwy 1 to hwy 9
Felton looking really good, BL and BC are very smoky but fire is not advancing off the ridge top for now which means they have been able to establish some fire lines to prevent progress

No structural loss today in Bonny Doon!
Air support was flying today despite challenging conditions because of smoke. Today is a small win. [YAY @calfireczu
you are amazing]
Burglary suppression is now the priority for public safety (after welfare), about 100 people patrolling evacuated areas. 20 calls for welfare checks, 25 calls for suspicious activity, 2 arrests today.

We take it personally, we know that people can't protect their homes.
arrests were folks from Santa Clara County and Alameda county, so these are OUTSIDERS trying to take advantage of the situation, and they are going to be caught.
Safety-wise, they do empathize with people wanting to go back home.

BUT THIS IS TOO DANGEROUS [his words and mine]

It also HAMPERS FIREFIGHTING [same]

It makes it harder for the FIREFIGHTERS TO GET WHERE THEY NEED TO GO [not me, him]
If you are evacuated, be sure to switch your mail with USPS

You can't come back and get your mail (it's also not being delivered)

2 minor changes from @SMCSheriff

Half Moon Bay Beaches closed
Road closure is now at 1 and Tunitas (sp?) Creek

There are going to be wind changes and this can get very dangerous very quickly, you must listen to the firefighters. Thank you!
Cal Fire Incident Command now.

Good day for firefighting (I LOVE IT) and we will work overnight to increase containment in the morning.

Growth in fire size is due to better mapping as opposed to major fire growth
They will start work again tomorrow at 0500, keep in mind that there will be a red flag warning for fire weather tomorrow with the potential for fire spread and also new lightning-based fires in addition to growth from spotting
Big up, Chief Larkin!

The limited resources that we have are doing a great job [HARD AGREE].

People who have stayed to protect their homes might be in serious, serious danger as the weather starts changing overnight. If you are on the roadways you make it hard for us to work
Fuels out there have been burning for 7 days in some areas, driving up the road to check the fire area, when we turned around there was a new burning branch that had fallen behind us, as you can see that's a dangerous and volatile situation
They are SUPER GRATEFUL for the support from the community but please please please do not drop off donations, they don't need them and they don't have time to deal with them
Instead you could make a poster expressing your gratitude, post it near a fire station where folks can see it, that actually means a lot.

Q: how many people do you need?
A: There are too many incidents to deal with each CA incident with maximum people.
A: resources are coming in from out of state

Q: is the national guard coming?
A: we are training them but the training takes 7 days, we will be able to onboard them when they are trained
Q: Forest service?
A: They are involved with the response

Q: On the map that cal fire posted, lightning strikes were indicated, but not within the fire zones. Can you explain?
A: Lots of fire growth from lightning, but fire moves away from the lightning strike site quickly
Q: What about Boulder Creek?
A: Look, terrain is bad and constructing control lines is really realy difficult. We're taking every opportunity to build defenses and control lines wherever they are practical. We will try to make the fire go AROUND the community rather than through.
Q: Ppl in Ben Lomond feel like they're only seeing vol ff, not cal fire?
A: Well the volunteers are definitely there, we can't have the presence we would have with maximum capacity, but we are very very up there both managing and physically responding
A: NO COMMUNITY is unprotected right now, if you can't see the ff that means they're in the forest constructing fire lines.

Q: Boulder Creek predictions from LA Times story?
A: With winds, we do expect fire in the community, that's why we evacuated.
A: Right now winds are calm, they will return, which is why we are working to channel the fire AROUND the structures in Boulder Creek. New winds should push fire away from Boulder Creek [YAY]

Look, we plan 48-96 hours ahead of time, we are responding to what the fire will do
Q: National guard followup
A: We have a great relationship with the national guard, they have gotten a lot better at fighting fires with us and are an excellent resource. They work throughout the year to plan with us so they are ready to go when we need them.
A: a 7 day training is really quick turnaround and reflects that they are trained year round to be ready. They will be used as hand crews to protect communities by building fire lines and perimeters.
Q: what tech are you using to respond to lightning fires?
A: National Weather Service is on the ball and relaying incidents to us as soon as they have it, this incident has its own specialized meterologist and also a fire behavior specialist to make predictions and respond quick
Q: damage and estimates?
A: 115 confirmed destroyed structures, we expect this number to go up, there is a lot of inaccesisble terrain. We can release statistics through the county assessor when we have the information. Our knowledge is very incomplete still; fire still burning.
A: Lots of people still up there and yes, they are getting in the way

Q: Outside resources?
A: yes, they are coming in from other states

Q: lightning?
A: We have lightning detection and a wildfire detection camera system monitoring lightning strike locations
Q: Evacuees?
A: Coordinate with local officials, county offices are handling evacuee support.

Tomorrow morning's press conference will be outside at 6am

Presser over

My postgame analysis is going to be short today!

Today really has been a good day for firefighting and they have made a lot more progress than they admit, for example that secondary line to the south between 1 and 9 is a big deal, lots of work, SUPER GOOD NEWS
Some people have been cranky that I'm being mean to the people who refuse to evacuate. Yes, I empathize. But I also think they're assholes and THEY GET IN THE WAY OF THE FIRE FIGHTING

Louder for the people in the back

REFUSING TO LEAVE GETS IN THE WAY OF FIGHTING THE FIRE
That's not just *ME* saying that, that's MULTIPLE FIRE CHIEFS AND SHERIFFS, in the press conference, JUST NOW, telling us that they would be better able to fight the fire if they didn't have to work around a bunch of residents who think they are smarter than fire fighters.
RESIDENTS DON'T KNOW MORE ABOUT FIRE FIGHTING THAN THE FIRE FIGHTERS DO

sorry

that's how it is
In the meantime let's see what happens overnight, expecting wind shifts between midnight and 4am especially at the higher elevations

I'll be livetweeting tomorrow's 6am @CALFIRECZU press conference and the 7am operations briefing if they share that with the public again.
