Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have turned out to be a wildly successful strategy for automobile manufacturers.

In Europe, for all the press pure Electric Vehicles get, PHEVs are now outselling them and growing at a far larger rate.

GERMANY:
In Europe’s largest market, PHEVs are now out-selling BEVs in absolute numbers and in addition to growing at a far more rapid yearly rate (484.7%) than BEVs (181.7%).

That said, both are dwarfed by simple Hybrids.

FRANCE:

France remains a BEV country, if for no other reason that it seems the French want French brands alone and Renault, PSA are only just getting PHEVs to market.
FRANCE:
But looking at the larger growth of PHEVs (446%) vs BEVs, it wound seem France might be taken over by PHEVs as soon as 2021.

SWITZERLAND:

PHEV’s are growing at annual rates of 300-400% and monthly sales have now overtaken BEVs in the last couple of months.

Unless the ID.3 can make an impact, PHEVs are ahead and pulling away rapidly

ITALY:

While still a tiny plug-in market, Italians chose PHEVs over BEVs last month (1.5% market share vs 1.2% market share)

SPAIN:

Spanish car buyers as well are choosing
PHEVs over BEVs (1.9% vs 1.4%)

PORTUGAL:

More of the same. BEVs sales actually fell last month. PHEVs kept exploding upwards and overtook BEVs

BELGIUM:

Belgian car buyers are choosing PHEVs by a significant margin. Only 31% of all Plug-in vehicles are BEV. This is a PHEV market.

SWEDEN:

As of June, Swedes are buying plug-ins but they clearly prefer PHEVs by a wide margin: BEVs are only 28% of plug in sales.

FINLAND:

Again- there is explosive growth in plug-in vehicles, but the lion’s share of the growth is in PHEVs. BEVs only get 20% of plug-in sales. Finland is firmly a PHEV country.

NORWAY

Dominated by BEVs. HOWEVER: Wrap your mind around the fact that in spite of no subsidies and onerous taxes on them, PHEVs still get 31% of all plug-in sales. Could anything speak more loudly of consumer preference for PHEVs?

NETHERLANDS

Firmly BEV...for now. 69% of plug-in sales are BEV. Only 31% are PHEV. That said, PHEVs are growing at an annual rate of 600%, so could overtake BEVs as early as next year.
In sum, we are seeing car-makers’ PHEV strategy pay off brilliantly as consumers seem to prefer PHEVs almost everywhere.

There is no fight between PHEVs and BEVs as both take sales from ICE cars. But PHEVs look like they will take home the lions share of market share.
We will see what the future brings. The ID.3, Mach-E, Model Y, ID.4 and some Chinese offerings may tip the scales some. But keep in mind the coming months will see dozens of new PHEVs come to market.
Skoda just started delivery of the PHEV version of its best selling Octavia. The PHEV Golf 8 started orders this week and delivers next year. There will be many more, each with pent up demand. The A250e PHEV had 15k orders in just 2 weeks and sold out. https://jesmb.de/2631/
PHEVs will continue to offer efficiency, fuel savings and government incentives. Newer PHEVs can also fast-charge and will crowd out BEVs from chargers. More importantly PHEVs tap into pre-existing massive economies of scale and will be quite profitable.
(Pardon my omission of England as stats there were hard to come by)
