next week makes the fifteenth anniversary of katrina. now this. my heart is heavy. hoping for the best. https://twitter.com/orlandosentinel/status/1296935348031885312
though it’s not often discussed nationally, katrina ravaged mississippi’s gulf coast. it even destroyed inland communities. the columbia area, for instance, was really hard hit.
I’ll never forget the destruction. I’ll never forget how terrifying it all was. my grandmother didn’t evacuate, and was without power until we got her a generator. without the generator, she would’ve been without power for over thirty days.
I won’t forget the taste of army rations, how the trees looked like someone went through stomping on them and breaking them like twigs, and how mississippi and louisiana, specifically the coast and new orleans, places I love with my whole heart, have never been the same.
I know I’m always mississippi-mississippi-mississippi, but it really is upsetting that the state isn’t really included in national hurricane conversations, specifically katrina, when we were so badly hurt by it.
