Looked a bit more into Biden's last four #DNC speeches as either VP or POTUS candidate ('08-'20). Ran the texts through the DICTION program to examine tone. The scores represent average words per 500 word segment in each speech. A few trends. Thread 1/
Biden's 2020 #DNC was a bit longer than his previous three, but not by much. Yes, the speech was shorter than previous nominees as @Robillard has noted. Lack of applause lines will explain some of this brevity. However, it is within range for Biden's DNC speeches overall. 2/
Looking at tone, Biden walked a tightrope in the '20 #DNC speech btwn light and dark (the "darkness" portion got picked up by many news outlets and DJT). His speech used more "hardship" language than previous ones, but also had more praise and inspiration language. 3/
What this shakes out to is a 2020 #DNC speech that had a more optimistic tone than the previous 3. Tonally, the speech seems to have found a balance between struggle and optimism. This may be important for how some voters assess voting "for" Biden instead of "against" Trump. End/
