Thread #7 - 1/n Raagam for the week: Hamsadhwani (Cry of the swan) – A bright, auspicious raagam, used by many musicians to begin concerts – more often than not, this ends up being a song on Pillaiyar (Happy Vinayaka Chaturthi)! Loved compiling this, hope you enjoy listening! :) https://twitter.com/rgchennai/status/1294629842608984065
/n Disclaimer :) It was quite difficult to find songs without major deviations – I hence had to exclude a lot of songs. This list contains songs that are as close as possible to the raagam. There's a playlist available in the last tweet of this thread. https://twitter.com/rgchennai/status/1281893304070582272?s=20
/n A carnatic song just to set context and also because, today is Pillaiyar Chaturthi. While so many singers have rendered this song, Yesudoss singing it will remain my favorite. I was lucky to listen to him sing this live last year! Vathapi Ganapathim!

/n Starting the cinema songs thread with this energetic beautiful song from Mahanadhi sung by Shobhana and SPB! Do notice the tabla in the charanams! There is another version of the song that has Uma Ramanan singing the female portions.
/n Another Ilayaraja song in the raagam that retains the classical touch in the golden voices of SPB and Chithra. Raja’s use of violin is well known, but again notice how beautifully he blends in the tabla in the charanams!
/n Just ARR’s voice and a guitar – voila, we have a classic! That’s the beauty of Hamsadhwani and the genius of this man! Who doesn’t love this song? உலகம் விடியட்டுமே பிள்ளையின் சிறுமுக சிரிப்பில்!
/n Back to Raja, who does a slightly westernized version of the raagam in this amazing melody! This time in Chithra and Mano’s voices, with a lot of Tabla in the charanams :) Vaa Vaa Vaa, Kanna Vaa..
/n I would be surprised if you have heard this song before – if not, do give a try to this one in the wonderful voice of Jayachandran.
/n This song deviates a lot from the raagam (with the introduction of ‘madhyamam’) towards the charanams, but the first few lines are an amazing use of Hamsadhwani, so couldn’t help but include it in the list.
/n Closing the thread with this legendary composition of ARR! It is unbelievable someone could do such a piece with Hamsadhwani, but hey we are talking about ARR here :)
P.S. Thanks to @Nushie7292 for this tweet, that triggered the idea of doing a thread on Hamsadhwani for this week, especially today! And thanks to @jiljilramamani for sending this tweet across :) https://twitter.com/Nushie7292/status/1296488864215949316?s=20
