I cannot decide if @AbigailShrier is a liar who thinks her readers are stupid or simply really bad at research, to the point where she should't have a job in media. Example A: this clip from her book claiming GCS makes trans people commit suicide. 1/n
The 2011 study she cites is by Cecilia Dhejne, which categorically does NOT show that, because there was no control group of trans people who did not have GCS. The study LITERALLY says you cannot make this inference in its text. 2/n

https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0016885
Shrier omitted the fact that Dhejne's study also found that after 1989, the increase in suicide rates was no long statistically significant. Dhejne noted this may be due to shifting societal attitude towards trans people 3/n
Shrier also left out the fact that Dhejne noted that her own study was an outlier, and that several other studies found no correlation. 4/n
So, Shrier either didn't read the actual study, or ignored it. She also did the shamefully bad job when it came to looking at what Dhejne herself has said in public about her study and what can be drawn from it. 5/n
She's too nice to say, but I will: she thinks people like Shrier are disingenuous hacks, but says it in the nicest way possible. 7/n
It's not that professionals who work with people like @jack_turban are ignoring the evidence, it's completely on people like Shrier who are either completely illiterate, incapable of googling when they don't understand a paper, or simply lying transphobic hacks. 8/n
When I wrote my book, I had actual SMEs from every field I covered review the sections in it, e.g. the Dean of American University Law School reviewed the section on law.

It's clear that no one did this in Shrier's. It's either sloppy as hell, or deliberately biased. 9/n
I think we can omit the possibility she is entirely illiterate, given how simple the sentences I highlighted were.

And People wonder why trans people have higher levels of stress and anxiety, when people like Shrier seem to exist in vast numbers with unlimited media access 10/n
