Tel Azekah from the Biblical account of the battle between David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1) took place in the Elah Valley near Khirbet Qeiyafa, at Ephes-dammim between Socoh and Azekah) sometime around 1000 B.C.E.

The city of Azekah was inhabited by the Canaanites (possibly sooner ) & was under the direct control of the biggest regional power of the day, Egypt.

The first mention of the city- Joshua 10:5-11-the combined attack of 5 Canaanite kings against Gibeon. Joshua & his army, coming to the relief of Gibeon, chased the Canaanite armies “as far as Azekah&Makkedah,”a distance of 19 mi.
The city was assigned to the tribe of Judah.
