C.S. Seshadri, who passed away recently, was among the first students to be inspired by #FatherRacine at #LoyolaCollege. Famous for several fundamental research contributions to the field of #AlgebraicGeometry, he founded the #ChennaiMathematicalInstitute (CMI). 4/15
Romulus Whitaker is a leader in #ConservationEcology and education in the field of Indian #herpetology. He founded the Madras #Snake Park in 1972 and the Madras #Crocodile Bank Trust in 1976. 5/15
The #observatory set up in #Madras by William Petrie in 1786 was among the first western-style observatories outside Europe. Norman #Pogson, working here, made the first observation of #Helium. It also served as a reference point for the #GreatTrigonometricSurvey of #India. 6/15
#Chennai has been a leader in providing quality #AccessibleHealthCare. Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy and Dr. V Shanta are associated with the #AdyarCancerInstitute, founded in 1952. Dr. K. S. Sanjivi founded #VoluntaryHealthServices and Dr S.S. Badrinath started #SankaraNethralaya. 7/15
#GNRamachandran and the #MadrasGroup made world-famous contributions to the fields of #Biophysics and #Biochemistry in the mid 20th century, while #GNRamachandran was at #MadrasUniversity. 8/15
Our own @IMScChennai, set up by Alladi Ramakrishnan in 1962, is an internationally known centre of #research in the fields of #Mathematics, #Physics, #TheoreticalComputerScience and #ComputationalBiology. 9/15
#PresidencyCollege in #Chennai is the only institution in #India to have two #NobelLaureates in science among its alumni, the physicists #CVRaman and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. S.R. Srinivasa Varadhan, another alumnus, was awarded the #AbelPrize in mathematics in 2007. 10/15
Much of the deepest Indian work on #Geometry in the last seven decades can be traced to the influence of a French Jesuit priest, #FatherRacine, who headed the department of mathematics at #LoyolaCollege, #Chennai, for three decades and inspired a generation of students. 11/15
