THREAD: Why do ALL migrants want to come to the UK?

They& #39;ve already reached France, why are they risking their lives at sea?

Benefits scroungers and a threat to national security?

Why is it only us accepting them? https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/aug/20/drowned-sudanese-teenager-identified-as-abdulfatah-hamdallah-wajdi">https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2...
1/7 Basic definitions worth knowing:

Refugee - left their home country because of a genuine fear for their life.

Asylum Seeker - seeking the status of a refugee but has not been granted it yet.

Migrant - moved to another country for work and are not fleeing persecution.
2/7 Everyone has the RIGHT to claim Asylum. This doesn& #39;t mean it will be granted. In UK, Asylum applicants attend a & #39;screening& #39; - an IO will interview to ascertain the nature of the claim. This process can take halfayear & during this, applicants are held in the UK for protection
3/7 @Nigel_Farage asserts that most Asylum applications are disingenuous/are refused, dubbing the process a waste of time, money, and resources. Acc. to @ukhomeoffice 54% of applicants were found to have legitimate cause (Mar. 2020) - Syria (97%), Libya (92%), & India (4% only)
4/7 Out of the 28 EU member states, UK ranked 16th for highest intake of Asylum Seekers in 2019. UK = 5 Asylum applications per 10k people; EU average = 14 per 10k people...Cyprus with almost 160 Asylum application per 10k people. Therefore, not ALL migrants want to come to UK
5/7 REASONS WHY MIGRANTS MAY WANT TO COME TO THE UK include, amongst other things: family/friends connection in UK. Previous links between their own country/UK - for e.g. Sudan is a former British colony. Speaking the language -e.g. Sudan& #39;s official languages includes English...
6/7 ...the belief that the UK is a safe, tolerant, and democratic country.

"If you were forced to flee, wouldn& #39;t you head somewhere people speak the same language, as you look for a job and to try and make friends?" - @BritishRedCross

Reasons for migrating are not financial!
7/7 In fact, according to @amnesty , France gives Asylum Seekers an average of £3,042 per year, whereas the UK only gives £1,950 per year.

Did we give a warm welcome before to refugees - such as those escaping the Nazis? Not so - we& #39;ve been here before. History repeats itself
