How My Business Made $700k+ Subscription Membership Sales (w/ no ads) in 2 years.

A model that any business can leverage.

[THREAD + CASE STUDY]
Have you ever heard of a Group Purchasing Organization?

They exist to help businesses interested in buying similar products gain leverage through combined purchasing power.

A product is more expensive if you only purchase one, but purchase 100, and the cost decreases.
We took this concept (typically only used by Fortune 500 Companies and large hospitals)

And introduced it to our community of small business owners:

- Agency Owners
- Coaches
- Consultants
- Speakers
- Authors
[PHASE 1]: Build a community of people all looking for the same outcome

For us, our community started as a mix of people looking to grow their businesses.
After getting to know them on a **deep & personal** level, we realized that most of them were still working a 9-5 job and developing something else on the side.

We saw the need to help them avoid getting trapped with a ton of different software subscriptions.
Every business owner within our community needed access to the same products:

- Email Marketing ➡️ ActiveCampaign

- Funnels ➡️ Unbounce

- Automation ➡️ Zapier

- Web Conferencing ➡️ Zoom

- CRM Software ➡️ GoHighLevel

- Payment Processing ➡️ PayKickstart

- And more
Lesson:

Start building a strong tribe or group of people.

Locally, you can make group lunches or online Facebook groups; however, avoid being the "expert," instead, be the "connector."
[PHASE 2]: Giving our customers what they need

For us, knowing what our customers required was already complete. We did not know how to give it to them or make it worth our time.
There are three things you can offer a software company:

1. New customers >

2. Have such a large percentage of their customers in your community that they give you the exclusive discounted pricing

3. Help teach their customers how to use their product
Going back to the Group Purchasing Organization concept mentioned in the beginning, we focused on #2.

Our community was full of people with communities, email lists, followings, and customers.
And we knew that they were either already customers of the SaaS companies mentioned above or were thinking about purchasing a subscription.

**This is where it gets good**
We went to these various SaaS companies, got into contact with their sales teams, and let them know that we have thousands of people willing to purchase a subscription.

The first company was Zoom.
[SIDE NOTE]: SaaS companies have secret money-making avenues called "reseller programs" and "agency programs."
Reseller = Purchasing licenses from them in bulk and reselling them at your markup price to your customers.

Agency = Set fee or discount on their license cost in exchange for your agency teaching their customers how to better use their product.
Imagine if you had a membership where you offered your community discounts on the software they use every day?

They become life long subscribers, AND partnerships with those companies await.
Ex. Have a podcasting agency with a large following on social media?

Offer your community and followers discounts on audio mastering software, microphones, mixers, or hosting software.

Go directly to those companies and ask for an exclusive discount.

[END OF SIDE NOTE]
We knew that most of our soon-to-be customers were using Zoom almost daily in their business.

So we applied to become a Zoom reseller.

We bought 100 licenses with full enterprise features (~$200/mo normally) for $2,099.

We then resold them to our customers for $25/mo.
To gain access to these savings of $175/mo or $2,100/year, they had to purchase a membership of $27/year.

We have since raised our membership price to $97.
This did four things:

1. Created a low-barrier of entry

2. Created exclusivity and urgency to be one of the first 100

3. Gave us $401 every month and $27 every year in profit

4. Word quickly spread about our new membership with a massive discount on Zoom
After we saw this work so well, the next steps were to:

- Get more deals
- Setup a quick landing page and checkout cart

Soon after Zoom went viral in dozens of Facebook Groups, people started coming to us requesting that we get discounts on their favorite software.
ActiveCampaign and Zapier quickly became our next two cash cows.

Now we have over 20 deals in our membership.
In the beginning, all we had was a crappy landing page and a checkout cart to collect payments.

- No systems
- No customer service
- No team
Lesson:

Stop boxing yourself into what you think you need to do to generate revenue.

Meaning, if you see a gap you can fill, fill it.

Yes, it'll be painful.

However, momentum will give you money.
[PHASE 3]: Turn this into an actual business

Starting with no foundation is a recipe for disaster.

I can sit here and tell you that all you need is a checkout cart and landing page to sell your product in the beginning.
Even though our membership spread like wildfire, churn, refunds, cancellations, and customer support issues became an everyday thing.

It's crucial to have a legal structure, systems, automation, a team, a culture, and quality customer service to scale.
**For the sake of this case study, I am not going to get into how we set up our systems, automation, team, culture, and customer service, but just how it impacted our growth as a company.**
Before adding this foundation, we were consistently hovering around $10-$15k/month recurring revenue.

After adding this foundation, we now consistently hover between $40k-$50k/month recurring revenue.

The secret? Better customer service and getting in front of more people.
Our membership is good enough, because who doesn't want to save money.

You can see the growth trajectory in the picture below.
Lesson:

With a lack of money, you have time, but with a little money, you can have a lot more time and sanity, if you allow yourself to delegate.
[CONCLUSION]

What we created here is nothing new or unique. Every business owner has the opportunity to implement this into their community.

I said "we" a lot in this thread. I did not do this alone. I have a business partner, a team, and the community to thank.
We could double these numbers with more partnerships, a bigger team, more effort from myself, and maybe some ads ;)

However, most of this is automated and delegated now. I spend maybe 10 hours per week on it. I like it that way. Plus, my partner does not want to grow it anymore.
Maybe I will spend more time and more effort on a future endeavor. This one is pretty decent for now.
