The Mutually Beneficial Introduction (aka the ᴍʙɪ)
The ᴍʙɪ is the simple act of connecting two people who should know each other via email

If executed well, your peers will land dope jobs/business partnerships, find great investments (even romantic relationships 🙊)

When poorly executed, it will land you on people's 💩 list
I've averaged one ᴍʙɪ per day for a DECADE. These gifts in my life can be traced to ᴍʙɪs:

- Getting promoted to MD at BlackRock (early)
- CNN calling me "Oprah for Millennials"
- Starting a coaching business (via inbound)
- Speaking at TED, WSJ
- Becoming Quartz's first EIR
Step 1:
GROW YOUR CURIOSITY ANTENNA

ᴍʙɪs are an act of service driven by genuine curiosity.

They require you to understand someone else's dreams, passions and interests.
Step 2:
LISTEN ACTIVELY

A simple ratio: 90% listening, 10% talking.

Yet it's so hard:

- We love to hear the sound of our own voices
- It's easier to talk thru an awkward silence
- Listening is passive (so you lose interest)
Unfortunately, here you can't fake it til you make it.

You can't fake genuinely caring.

This separates the Transactional ᴍʙɪ from the Heartfelt ᴍʙɪ.
Step 3:
MOVE BEYOND THE OBVIOUS

Don't mentally recreate their LinkedIn profile.

Do two Deloitte consultants want to meet?
Or two random USC alums?

Possibly, but you'd be missing key parts of the story.
Instead, consider an alternate question:

"What can't you learn about this person from a Google search?"

Maybe they love their Air Maxes.
Or they lived in Ubud for 6 weeks.
Or are passionate about board (of director) diversity.

These are the ᴍʙɪs that 🔥🔥🔥.
Step 4:
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PERSONAL CRM?

Nope, the good ol' first brain works just fine here.

Notion, Airtable or hacked Google Sheets are just Shiny New Toy Syndrome.

Get started with a simple list and a few tags.

Never underestimate the power of someone who GENUINELY CARES
Step 5:
YOUR TURN

Start small.
One ᴍʙɪ per week.
It'll feel hard.
But open your heart, you got this.
And the people you love, will thank you.

(And ya never know, some of that pixie dust may come back to find you.)
