In an alternative 2020, I would be going to Kamern (at river Elbe) tomorrow, to teach a one week ecology field course to a group of ~20 biology undergrads @HumboldtUni as I did in 2019
Not surprisingly, these kinds of field trips have all been canceled due to the pandemic 1/ https://twitter.com/gkalinkat/status/1165603366342418432
while I’ll definitely miss this opportunity to do a „infiltration camp“ with the students (H/T @markus_eichhorn) there are also big advantages of the alternative we’ve created (the fact that I’ll be able to read a book w/my kids in the evenings is just one of them) 2/
the restructured & improvised field course I’ll teach now forced me to look at my very close vicinity in the SE-corner of Berlin w/ a fresh view. I decided to shine a light on introduced species in & homogenisation of (peri)urban ecosystems & I’m really excited about it 3/
This means during the coming 4 days I’ll be in the field with a small group of students in the mornings and online with the whole group in the afternoon. I’ll try to post more pics from our course later
#StayTuned 4/
btw: below you can see two invasive plant species that are widespread in central Europe: Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis, left) and Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera, right) 5/ https://twitter.com/gkalinkat/status/1296768965620969472?s=20
continuing this thread w/ some impressions from our local #ecology #fieldcourse in SE-Berlin. Find a few very nice grasshoppers (most of them protected in DE) in the thread below 👇 6/ https://twitter.com/gkalinkat/status/1297987254640574469
