how to use trigger warnings correctly + a list of common triggers - a thread
disclamer: i am not a professional in any of this. i am a minor trying to do my part in educating people about triggers and trying to make sure as few people as possible get triggered.

a trigger warning, or tw acts as a warning for sensitive topics that can bring up bad memories for someone, cause them to relapse, or just expose them to content that they are uncomfortable with etc.
when typing out the actual trigger do not censor words. it is common for people to have triggering topics muted to avoid seeing them on their time lines. censoring the trigger warning bypasses this feature. for example:
tw // r*pe
tw // r4pe
tw // rape
tw // r*pe

tw // rape

when using a trigger warning, make sure its correct and clear. avoid extra punctuation, extra letters, misspelled words, forgetting spaces, etc.
tw // needlles
tw // neidles
etc.
tw // needles
tw // needlles

tw // needles

do not use broad warnings. this can cause content to bypass the muted words system.
tw // everything
tw // *blank*
tw // blood, drugs, needles
tw // everything

tw // blood, drugs, needles

in general when tweeting about triggering topics use the following format:
tw//topic
tw topic //
tw // topic
tw//topic

tw topic //

tw // topic

when there is multiple topics make sure there is space between them as muted words do not allow punctuation to be connected.
tw // topic1,topic2
tw // topic1 , topic2
tw // topic1,topic2

tw // topic1 , topic2

regarding content placement make sure there is space between the warning and the content.
tw // topic (content)
tw // topic
(content)
tw // topic

also, reminder to please use trigger warnings in groupchats / dms. muted words still show up there so it’s especially important to use trigger warnings.
if someone asks you to use a trigger warning, use it. you can not dictate what is and isn’t triggering for someone so please be considerate.
if you mess up and forget to put a tw, delete the tweet, apologize, and tweet it again with the tw. don’t just put it in the comments and call it good, that doesn’t help. it’s ok to make mistakes, it’s human. just correct yourself and move forward, and don’t make all about you.
if you see a trigger warning you’ve never seen before, don’t mock it or be rude when asking about it.
“hey! i’ve never seen this trigger warning before, what is it?”
“lmao they really need a trigger warning for this? snowflakes.”
“hey! i’ve never seen this trigger warning before, what is it?”

“lmao they really need a trigger warning for this? snowflakes.”

people may say ‘real life doesn’t come with trigger warnings!’ they’re right. make the life of people who have trauma easier by making sure they dont have to see their triggers online. if people get triggered online, it stops being their safe place and makes life harder for them.

for tv and movies http://doesthedogdie.com is a good resource to see if media contains triggers, look up the name of the media on the website and it should provide a list of wether or not certain triggering material is present.

also when using a trigger warning do not abbreviate anything. some people may have muted words before but since its abbreviated the mute feature doesn’t work in its intended way.
