At last, I& #39;m excited to share a COVID-related writing project I& #39;ve been working on!
It started with a question that hit close to home: as labs shut down in March, how could basic research scientists support emergency responses or testing efforts? (1/10) https://medium.com/@jjmarlow/the-pivot-1deab04aa63f">https://medium.com/@jjmarlow...

Many of the skills scientists use for fundamental research translate to aspects of the COVID response, so a number of scientists got creative and found ways to join the fight. (2/10)
@cthoene79 studies star explosions, but she put her supernova research on hold to analyze German response measures and develop models based around lockdown data. (3/10)
Skyler Friedline had to pause his NASA research project, so he joined @UCBerkeley& #39;s @igisci virus testing team, helping to design an intricate sample-tracking system. (4/10)
@BSteve1120 used his experience extracting RNA from "crazy, crappy samples" like crude oil to ramp up testing in Norman, Oklahoma. (5/10)
@NatSteinemann was all set to deploy new equipment to gain insight into brain function, but soon found herself coordinating a range of projects with @Columbia_CRAC. (6/10)
Several such pivots were facilitated by @Crowdfightcovi1, a research match-making service developed by @alPerezEscudero, Sara Arganda Carreras, and Daniel Calovi. (7/10)
But as days turned to weeks and months, labs began to re-open, and these researchers faced an agonizing choice: return to the projects they had waited years to work on, or re-direct their intellectual firepower by integrating virus research into their long-term plans? (8/10)
These stories just scratch the surface of the innovative ways in which basic research scientists have sought to use their skills and support the heroic efforts front-line medical workers. (9/10)
And while we obviously have a long way to go in the fight against COVID, it& #39;s been truly inspiring to watch researchers take initiative, build unexpected partnerships, and find ways to make a difference. (10/10)
