What is Muharram? A thread.

As the month of Muharram comes upon us, some may be confused as to why Shias value the month so much. This thread will explain why the month should hold importance to ALL Muslims. (1)

After the month of Ramadan, the month of Muharram is most sacred. It is the month in which Imam Hussainع (grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) and his family were brutally killed by Yazid (la) and his army. (2)

Although Yazid was caliph at the time, the people did not like him and wanted Imam Hussainع to be their caliph, due to his kind virtues. (3)

Yazid tried to convince Imam Hussainع to be by his side to get support of the people however Imam Hussainع refused. Imam Hussainع said; “I only desire to spread good values and prevent evil.” (4)

This angered Yazid as he knew that if he did not get the support of Imam Hussainع he would never get support from the people and his time as caliph would be over. (5)

And this is why the battle took place. A battle between good and evil. A battle to fight injustice and the battle that lead to Islam being saved. Although Imam Hussainع had a small army of 72, in comparison to Yazids army of thousands, he did not give up. (6)

Imam Hussainع and his companions (including his 6 month old son, Asgharع) all died shaheed. Although at the time Yazid took this as a huge victory, today nobody remembers Yazid. When we are reminded of Yazid we send lanat on him, and when we are reminded of Hussainع we cry. (7)

They tried to bury us, but they didn't know that we were seeds. لانات على اعداء الحسين

Yazid did not even spare 6 month old Asghar. When Imam Hussain pleaded to give him water they slit Asghars throat. (8)

When Abbasع went to get water for the children they severed his arms from his body. They did not even spare 13 year old Qasim. His body was trampled upon by horses. (9)

They killed Akbar and would not let Imam Hussainع bury his body. They killed young Aun o Muhamad in front of their mother, Zainabع they took their chadors and put ill Imam Zain Ul Abideenع in shackles. (10)

They cut Hussainsع head in front of his four year old daughter Sakinaع they ripped her earrings out of her ears until they bled and they took her chador from her head. She cradled Hussainsع head and begged him to come back. "Haye baba" she cried. (11)
