When I was working at a care home I noticed that a Muslim lady was being fed ham sandwiches. When I raised it with the staff they said that it was fine because the lady would pick them herself at lunch (bear in mind this woman had severe dementia)
They told me “yh but this is a Catholic care home” as if that was even an excuse? She was the only Muslim in the whole place and spent all her time reading the Quran. When her son came to visit I told him and he was so shocked bc it had been discussed so he filed a complaint.
Just know that my reference was terrible but I’d do it again in a heartbeat
I wanted to add that none of us are in a position to judge her family for deciding to put her in a care home. It’s a difficult personal decision to make. In my experience, it’s usually because care homes might be the only way in which skilled full time care can be provided
This wasn’t to judge her family at all, I don’t think that’s fair. I am more outraged by the care home disregarding a resident’s religious preferences and instead of showing accountability attempting to justify it..
