Was working on a Vic Beasley thread a few weeks ago but decided to wait until my guy showed up to camp.
Now that he’s nearly back (
) I’ll take a look at how he can fit in the Titans Defense:
Now that he’s nearly back (

First off: Beasley’s combine performance is well-known but the numbers are still remarkable looking back on it.
Running a 4.53 with a 41” vertical and 35 reps on the bench @ 6’3” and 246 lbs is absurd.

After blowing up the combine, Beasley was selected 8th overall by the Falcons in 2015.
He recorded 4 sacks as a rookie but burst onto the scene with a league-leading 15.5 sacks in 2016. Beasley was named a First-Team All-Pro and was selected to his only Pro Bowl.

Since then it’s been a struggle with consistency. The Falcons decided to pick up his 5th-year option as a prove-it year but didn’t pursue contract negotiations even after a better season from Beasley.
2017: 5 sacks
2018: 5 sacks
2019: 8 sacks

He had a slow start to the 2019 season (as did the entire Falcons team) but finished with 6.5 sacks and 13 pressures over his last 8 games.
I know he hasn’t made the greatest first impression in Tennessee but man I’m excited because I think he’s still got juice.

His athleticism and speed allow him to be super effective when shooting the B gap and on stunts. He racked up a ton of pressures on plays like these last year.
Beasley’s get off is still so explosive. He gets up the field so fast.
Beasley ranked 26th in snaps by an EDGE last year with 757. Harold Landry had 953 total snaps not counting playoffs
.
Hopefully with the + of Beasley, the Titans can rotate their pass rush more effectively. Landry, Beasley, Correa, Roberson, and Walker give them a solid unit.

Vrabel stressed “front multiplicity” when he was hired. His defense is premised on positional versatility with players being required to play many different roles.
Beasley certainly fits the bill. He played 81 snaps in coverage which was 10th most by an EDGE last year.

Lines up on the edge but drops back into a zone.
I like the way he gets in the sight of Jimmy Gs first read to Kittle but then watches his eyes and moves across the field to dissuade a tough throw to #17.
He’s very capable in coverage.

More than athletic enough to spy a quarterback.
Not sure why the Falcons had him on Gurley in man coverage but I think he did a great job of getting in good position.
He nearly breaks up a perfectly thrown wheel route.

I know there have been concerns over his desire to play football but I really didn’t see anything from his tape last year that made me question his effort.
A one-year, $9.5 million deal for the former All-Pro is a low-risk/high-reward type value that I like from Jon Robinson.
It’s a similar chance the Buccaneers took on Shaq Barrett who ended up leading the league in sacks last year.

Overall, the main gripe surrounding Beasley has been consistent play. He has all of the tools from an athletic standpoint to be a premier pass rusher in this league it’s just about putting it all together on a weekly basis. Hopefully a change of scenery can help his cause.
