It’s senior year.
Here’s a thread I’ll update weekly on what I’ve learned (or am grateful for) during my time in undergrad.
It’s senior year.
Here’s a thread I’ll update weekly on what I’ve learned (or am grateful for) during my time in undergrad.
(1) I’ve learned that there’s an unbelievable diversity of beliefs, even within Christianity. Seeing the grayness of faith has allowed me to finally deconstruct and rebuild my beliefs and values after spending several years in existential hell.
10/10 recommend.

(2) I’ve learned that the tension between psychology and philosophy runs deep. Collaboration can relieve this tension, and interdisciplinary approaches often produce much richer conclusions anyway.
or at least dear god i hope so

(3) I’ve learned that loving-kindness meditation is the single greatest habit I’ve developed that diminishes the hate I feel towards myself and others.
I’ve also learned that I have no persuasive powers to get other people to try it.

(4) I’ve learned that sometimes I’m the villain in someone’s story, and it’s not my job to reframe myself as if I was the protagonist in the “moral right.” It’s my job to improve and engage in virtue development.
I’m lying. I haven’t fully learned this. I just wish I have.

(5) I’ve learned that I hate printers.
(6) I’m grateful for losing my 4.0 GPA in my first semester of college. This has led to ENORMOUSLY less pressure on me to be perfect throughout my undergraduate career.
thanks, dr. schrock......
(disclaimer: he’s actually one of my fav profs so that’s a serious thanks)

(7) I’m grateful for gradually getting out of the competitive mindset of academia and focusing so much more on community. Being intimidated by classmates became admiring them instead.
I admire so many of my classmates. Thank you for showing me how much I don’t know.

(8) I’m grateful for some of the incredible professors I’ve had that are willing to invest just as much time into me outside of the classroom as they already do inside of the classroom.
I’m even more grateful for the profs who keep tissues in their office.
I’m even more grateful for the profs who keep tissues in their office.
(9) I’m grateful for the classes like today where the professor accidentally got kicked out of the Zoom session and all the students stuck around until she came back and even tried to continue on the lecture topic together in the meantime.
You guys freakin blow my mind.
You guys freakin blow my mind.
(10) I’m grateful for all the friends who gave me rides when I didn’t have a car for THREE YEARS of college. aaaaand I’m grateful that you guys haven’t disowned me from how much gas money I owe you..
(11) I’ve learned that rest can be productive if engaged in intentionally, and productivity can be restful if you truly enjoy what you’re doing. It doesn’t have to be dichotomous.
...but I recognize that’s easier said than done.
...but I recognize that’s easier said than done.
(12) I’ve learned that my type A tendencies will only take me so far and that I need to be more flexible and adaptable to build resilience.
And NOTHING has taught me that lesson more than trying to flippin conduct research during a flippin pandemic and iswearqguzkvqtp

(13) I’ve learned that (for me) optimism is not the belief that positive circumstances are more likely to occur; optimism is the belief in one’s ability to adapt when negative circumstances inevitably occur.
Hedonic adaptation is powerful, and I WILL adapt to the good and bad.

(14) I’ve learned, and relearned, that sexism exists, and female mentors are crucial.
ⓘ Official sources state that this is so freakin true.

(15) I’ve learned that once you apply a label to someone’s personality/beliefs, you begin to disregard the complexity of their identity.
Many things in life are a spectrum, and to identify yourself within a narrow and discrete box oversimplifies the beauty of who you are.

(16) I’m grateful for professors who did their best to put a face to the name. Obviously this is a lot harder to do in large classes, but asking a student for their name goes a long way.
And then there’s Zoom which takes the fun out of name guessing

(17) I’m grateful for living in the age of the Internet because I can’t imagine how long it took to write research papers without Google Scholar and library databases.
Props to older generations who had to get out of bed to write a paper. please don’t hold this over our heads

(18) I’m grateful for my classmates who are open about their “controversial” beliefs and lifestyles.
You’ve taught me to be brave, and I can’t thank you enough.

(19) I’m grateful for rejection (I’m actually not but eventually I will be).
Nothing teaches you to be more adaptable than having doors closed and not being sure what in the world to do next. Send help

(20) I’m grateful for unusual architecture. Gotta add some
spice
to your college campus

(21) I’ve learned that community is truly necessary and that there’s a reason why many people feel destabilized after graduating or leaving any familiar setting.
Surprised there’s not more people on campus who warn seniors. Oh wait. They’re called alumni who can’t stop visiting

(22) I’ve learned that progress isn’t defined by the ideology of one person in a leadership role, but rather by the number of dissenting voices.
Thank you to the Lee students and professors who have used their voices to loudly proclaim love and hospitality despite opposition.

(23) I’ve learned that if my hobbies are causing me stress, that’s kinda defeating the purpose of having the hobby..
I will say though that very few things get me as excited as the “List of Hobbies” Wikipedia page. 10/10 recommend

(24) I’ve learned that I can live in a different country for months and still be nothing more than a tourist.
I never had to deal with that country’s housing/job market and experience the repercussions of their economy/legislation. But watch me still call it my other home..

(25) I’ve learned how to say “thank you” when receiving compliments!!! I’ve even moved past the intermediate level where you figure out how to not give compulsory compliments back that seem insincere
(26) I’m grateful for modern medical science and the insane ability for teams to make safe and effective vaccines in under a year.
I’m even more grateful I’m getting my second dose a few days before graduation. This message is brought to you by Moderna gang.

(27) I am so deeply grateful for my incredible cohort in Kairos. I had never known such rich friendships before you bunch of nerds entered my life four years ago. With everything in me, thank you.
Now, go get that Good Life

(28) I’m grateful for coffee. I haven’t actually been able to get into it myself (yet), but this thing seems to be singlehandedly responsible for getting my friends and professors to show up to class, so I’ll toast to that.
(29) I'm grateful for this thread (and that it is almost ending). It has forced me to be reflective and grateful despite all the godforsaken days this year.
I am going to add one last tweet to this thread next week after my graduation, and then I'll call it a day.
