I am being *100% serious* when I tell you the kids on TikTok who have started distance learning already are giving some very valuable and useful feedback on their experiences thus far.
One kid posted a 60 second TikTok about being thrown into a breakout room with just one other kid and they didn’t know each other and had to read and analyze Ode on a Grecian urn together. Alone. Don’t put the kids in 2 person breakouts if you haven’t built community.
If you tell them to take off a hat/hoodie/durag or stop eating in their own house, they’re going to put you on blast and also not do what you told them anyway because they know your virtual classroom is... their house.
This one may be controversial, take it for what it’s worth, but if you’re a high school teacher, don’t even waste time on that Bitmoji classroom bc the kids are very confused by all their teachers suddenly using Bitmojis with them. If you like it, cool I’m just relaying info.
So far most of them are just leery of turning on their cameras and mics at all because they don’t know anyone and it’s awkward so prepare for that and don’t take it personally, just try to create a space where they might start to feel ok being on camera or mic
One girl posted that she was the only one who showed up to her teacher’s Google call and he was so happy she was there it made her tear up and kids in comments were very supportive of him being a good teacher and very angry at her peers for bailing on him!
