Time for a very mature and responsible run through Persona 5 Royal #PS4share
May as well thread this. There will probably be a lot of them. https://twitter.com/dnallohleoj/status/1295149818881417217?s=19
According to @Iron_Jexmas there is some running joke/challenge about not giving Haru screen time. I don't get it but I think I just lost
Ok so I know I've talked about how much I love Persona 5's User Interface but since I'm playing right now anyway I might throw up some visual samples of why I think it's great.
Ok this menu right here is where I started noticing that P5 had a great UI. Just watched it one day, and holy shit, it is one of the most "alive" menus I've ever seen. https://twitter.com/dnallohleoj/status/1295932694308761602?s=19
I've said before that this game breaks a lot of rules I was taught in my foundational graphic design classes, and yet because of how those rules were broken/others compensated for them, it all works.
For instance, that much red on screen would usually prompt people to look away because it's an overwhelming color. And seriously, there's red everywhere. But there's such a heavy visual imbalance that any area of the screen that goes totally red, you just straight up ignore.
The white areas are not only more comfortable to look at, there is A LOT going on in them. Navigate the options, and the background changes slightly. Open a sub-menu, and Joker moves, immediately directing your eye to the new part of the screen that contains useful information.
Seriously, just watch the Joker sprite in the background. The menu uses literal motion to redirect your attention, but not just with graphics, they do it with a whole animated character.
And the best part? Nearly every menu is like this. The major shops use this same setup!

I'm tired now and shutting the game off but when I pick this up next I'll probably gush over ways they let you make choices by NOT giving you a menu.
Apparently during the Madarame case Makoto follows you around on the First floor of the school? It's adorable and hilarious
Alright the upload on this is FINALLY done so now I can share my unsolicited thoughts on the battle screen. Specifically, the clever ways it avoids giving you menus unless absolutely necessary
That got cut down a bit so take this screenshot from the internet.
Anyway, one of the biggest parts of any turn-based game is its combat menu. The more complex the game, the more tedious that menu becomes to navigate, and off the DS and PC, most games don't have a good solution

I just beat Personas 3 and 4 over the summer, and hoo, boy, were those menus a pain! The main page had something like 8 options, and all but two lead to a sub-menu displayed in list form.
As a strategy game, this might not be all bad. But time spent on that menu adds up.

Here, though? You have 5 options, and each one is bound to a hotkey. In fact, most sub-menus are hotkeyed as well. There are only 2 cases where you are actually forced to navigate a list. One of them, the item menu, you rarely ever use. The other is covered in shortcuts.
There are a few other selection points that require manual navigation, such as targeting, but even those are displayed as part of the environment and not as part of an overlay. It disguises the lists really well, and navigates them for you when it can.
This means that you only have to memorize 5-8 buttons to navigate, and once you have that down, you can focus more on your strategy without worrying about where you'll find your next move. The game can usually even find that for you!
Honestly, I prefer the Judgement Arcana being a new dream for the Crew like it was in 3 and 4 and not tied to a specific person like it is in 5.
This video game expects me to believe that Joker is incapable of making any decision when his talking cat friend isn't present
Watching a movie to boost my proficiency while hiring a maid to make me lockpicks, a task that would also boost my proficiency
Not only can I not ignore him, I am incapable of doing literally anything without him walking me through it, so yeah we're getting him back.
Oh crap I forgot I needed to actually tweet my screenshots. Uhh... what was i gonna say about Futaba's All-Out Attack?
Ah, yes, an opportunity to get Yuske to take his clothes off. Just what the fanservice doctor ordered
Oh good, it's been a minute since I could see the boyfriend I'm not actually allowed to romance because this game doesn't want you to get a gay protagonist WHICH IS BULLSHIT
Sorry. I meant to say "Help! I'm flirting back now but I'm too straight to notice!"

Oh, how I wish I could have a save state for this moment. I should be allowed to try them all and it's cruel that I can only have one
Wow I can't believe I'm as far into the game as I am and I still haven't brought up just how far its come re: cinematic storytelling, even in the midst of turn-based combat.
oh right, that's because Twitter keeps eating up and destroying my video evidence of it. Anyway, as I've said before, I played Persona 4 and 3 this summer (yes, in that order, it was like watching a great system get progressively worse) and I've seen a LOT of Persona awakenings.
And the games got better about them as time went on, but with the exception of the main characters, the awakenings were... well, pretty boring. In Persona 3, every teammate except Fuuka already has their persona when you meet them.
In Persona 4, the boss fights had awesome reveals (sometimes) but when a persons' shadow became their Persona, it just kind of appeared, and then they had it. The awakening was part of the falling action of that story arc. It always left me wanting more out of it.
But 5? By this point, longtime fans of the series know a LOT about the power and nature of Persona. It's gained by accepting the parts of yourself you'd been rejecting, and because of where it comes from, it's not all that different from the Shadows you fight.
It's not the "you" you show the world, so it acts as a facade that defends you when surrounded by other abstract concepts made material. It requires self-awareness and acceptance to wield.
And 5 puts ALL of that lore into the Awakening. When a teammate's shadow first speaks to them, it is a PAINFUL experience. They have a splitting headache as they're forced to reconcile with thoughts, feelings, and choices they'd been denying.
Then, the mask appears on their face. It's one strange thing too many. They immediately try to rip it off. And in doing so, the contract is forged. I am thou. Thou art I. Their true nature is revealed, and they are ready to fight!
The music playing for this struggle transitions into an electric guitar solo, making a declaration as powerful as the words coming out of the newly-awakened Persona user's mouth. Combat starts, and by time words are done being exchanged, the song has reached a point to signal:
it's battle time!
Everything about it. The choice to rebel. The internal struggle that follows. The resolve to stand behind that choice. The POWER and FREEDOM it brings with it.
All set to the perfect score.

I don't remember this from the original. Though to be fair I was horrible about time management when I played that one.
I know his glasses are fogged over but the glasses glare trope is so strong that if he wasn't talking about how bad his vision was I'd think he was about to tell me his evil plan and how I'd been outplayed from the start
I had remembered Lavenza being closer to Joker's age but apparently she is also a small child. Albeit one with a chainsaw
For some reason the screenshot didn't save but suffice it to say that "kiss him" was not a dialogue option
Atlus doesn't want me to show you how ridiculous Yuske's scarf is
Seems like there might be a block on using PS4 Share over the entire chunk of additional content so this might be the end of this thread. Hope anyone crazy enough to follow along enjoyed seeing my bad jokes and occasional rant about how great the game is.
