WHY AMITY APPEARS TO BE PURPOSEFULLY BISEXUAL-CODED (and why that matters for #TheOwlHouse fandom)
✨ A thread by a bisexual person ✨

#lumity #AmityBlight
I’ve noticed a trend in my time in fandom. One that I’m not exactly sure how to feel about, honestly. If one character is coded or confirmed bisexual, their romantic interest is considered gay by the fandom. I am not trying to say this trend has any malice.
But this trend continues with Lumity. Luz is considered bi, so Amity is considered a lesbian in turn. But I think that Amity and Luz are both purposefully written to be bisexual.
Recently, the creator of The Owl House had this to say after Grom Night aired.
And the fandom and the media interpreted it to be about Luz. I mean, yeah, I get it. Luz has been bi-coded since the beginning!
But the thing that I didn’t understand is why would Dana confirm LUZ bisexual when it had been AMITY who had just been revealed to have a sapphic crush? The conversation would naturally be about AMITY as a LGBT+ character, wouldn’t it?
She said she wanted to write bi characters. So it’s safe to assume that, yes, the bisexual-coding with Luz was intentional. But this would also mean the bisexual-coding with Amity was intentional. Let’s talk about bi-coding.
Coding a character as bi often relies on having a character show attraction to both genders. Let’s take a look at another (purposefully) bi-coded character; Glimmer. She ends up dating a boy, Bow, but she also shows attraction to Adora, a girl. That’s what bi-coding is all about.
In an earlier episode, we see Amity is shipping herself with what certainly appears to be a male character. This is her showing attraction to a boy. And, although comphet is a very real thing, that would not be covered in a children’s cartoon.
If Amity was intended to be a lesbian by the writers, this would not be there. LGBT+ themes would be very surface-level; this is Disney, after all. Comphet would not be something that is discussed at all. And, again, Dana said she WANTED to write BISEXUAL characters specifically.
Why would she show Amity shipping herself with a man, effectively bi-coding her, when she said she wanted to write bisexual character, if she was intended to be a lesbian? Young LGBT+ kids would likely not know about comphet yet.
With all this said, nothing is confirmed. All we know for a fact is that at least one character in The Owl House is bisexual, and that Amity is sapphic. But, to an extent, coding needs to be respected.
Undyne from Undertale is never TECHNICALLY confirmed to be a lesbian. But she is obviously intended to be a lesbian and is lesbian-coded. And the majority of the fandom accepts this. So why is that different for Amity?
In the end, I can’t and honestly don’t want to force you to stop headcanoning Amity as a lesbian if that makes you happy. But the simple truth is that Amity being a lesbian is very clearly not what was intended.
She was shown having attraction to boys & girls by a creator who said she wanted to write bi characters. All Im asking for is acknowledging that she is INTENDED to be read as bi, but you read her differently & that you’re conscious of how you treat her character with this in mind
