let’s talk about ‘stan culture’ and its effect on creators and, well, people; a thread
let’s start with the question “what is a stan?”

the written dictionary definition and widely used definition describes it as someone who will obsess over a creator. this much is true, but there is a wide divide between types of stans.
the reason “overzealous or obsessive” is highlighted is because stans are noticed as people who are creepy and obsessed with people. not casual fans who produce nice and wholesome things.
casual stans, or just fans, are those who generally make content or casually support favorite creators and influencers. a nice example would be someone creating something like fanart for their favorite singer.
they contrast hard against the other side of stanning. but before i address that, let’s use an example from the past.

tw// drugs and self harm for the next block
there was a 4chan hoax that went around in january 2013 that concocted the hashtag “cutforbieber” or “cuttingforbieber”
a photo of justin bieber smoking a joint circulated worldwide on the internet overnight, and while no one cut to make him “stop doing drugs,” it could’ve been possible.

for the next block, i will talk about something barely recent; the smplive community

in late 2019, the following tweet circulated;
whether it was fake/‘satire’ or not doesn’t matter in this situation. what does is the feeling, as a creator, knowing one of your fans took something that you consumed or have used and threw it in their shrine or a drawer or have it in some shape or form.
if this were you, it’d creep you out. you’re an influencer and you go to a con to have fun. behind your back, a fan steals something you had out and used. how would you feel in this situation if not creeped out and uncomfortable?
this tweet by wilbursoot kind of explains that last block there and the divide between casual fans and diehards.
now that we have that out of the way, you might have an idea of “diehard stans” or what seems to be the widely normalized. the face of stan community is an embarassment to casual fans because it’s swamped by annoying kpop fancams and creepy fans who steal shit from creators.
making someone uncomfortable doesn’t make you funny, it makes you a douche. if you were in the same room as your favorite person, would you be telling them all your weird fantasies and dreams about them that’d make them overly uncomfy? please say no.
it may be common sense to not (publicly) discuss these things, but apparently it isn’t common sense to flat out not do them. you need to think about other people. influencers are people. creators are people. people are PEOPLE.
these events carry onto creators’ real lives and real people can ask them “hey aren’t you that person who’s widely known for having annoying fans?” isn’t that awkward and embarrassing?
this is where the toxic ‘parasocial relationships’ will come in. you may think you know a creator because they post “relatable” tweets or media online. but, you really, most likely don’t.
not everyone keeps their personal life LIVE or ONLINE. if everyone knew your house address, full name, or your mom’s maiden name, and you were put on such a high pedestal as a celebrity knowing you could be stalked or killed with this information, it’d make you uncomfortable.
exposing your personal life to people requires trust and a bond. creators love their fans and appreciate them, but they don’t personally know each and every single one of their fans.
various issues within the stan community are NORMALIZED now because they are widely noticed. it’s like kpop fancams. you can’t “cancel” someone because they “don’t like kpop.” they’re not talking about kpop, they’re talking about stans. the community has ruined the media.
tw// danganronpa bnha homestuck mention

there are a lot of medias where the community has ruined it for people. these are most widely noticed as kpop, danganronpa, homestuck, love live, bnha, the furry or mlp community, anything.

people are tired of going anywhere and seeing a kpop fancam. someone could’ve died and you could see “maybe if they stanned loona [fancam]” so much so it’s annoying. no one wants to see that. calm down
it’s like the trans rights movement. something shouldn’t be memed to hell that people can just say a desaturated, ingenuine “yayy trans rights!!” solely because the fans have ruined it for true allies and supporters.
i’m done now bc i’m almost at thread upload limit uhh go drink water pick up a book or something look at my friend’s lizard
