zoomers: heres how to torrent https://twitter.com/nekorug/status/1294666052253691908
did u know soulseek still works extremely well. people have kept it semi-secret for a decade but it's time to let people know
in the USA its literally this easy. get a vpn. pay for it by canceling your spotify sub. and install uBlock Origin for browser based piracy/streams. don't be a sissy. if you argue with me in the replies like "oh this post doesnt apply to me because [SOME REASON]" i will block you
malwarebytes is another acceptable and free antivirus (not a vpn, a vpn is different). it's impossible to get "viruses" in the classical sense without being catastrophically negligent, like in my entire career of piracy i have gotten maybe one and it was caught immediately
"i dont want to fill up my computer storage :(" well good news
people like mullvad a lot! it sounds good https://twitter.com/PyronoidD/status/1294933123982143488
you can seriously also just go to a starbucks and pirate shit on their wifi. or mcdonalds or anyone else who has accessible wifi. they do not bother to block it. again, vpn is a good idea here and ofc antivirus but if you really ddont want to use your own wifi, you dont have to
need to start a Boys & Girls Club USA just for computer literacy i guess. big brother program. dissipated 40 year old xillennials teach you how to set up your free home Plex server with auto-downloading anime subtitles

i have either this one or a different one running and it works great as long as i update it regualrly. theres NO type of paywall that can actually prevent you from accessing software and media freely, it turns out. like they cant do it. https://twitter.com/sixregrets/status/1294937112857346050
extremely true, we're just happy to save someone from dumping money into Capitalism https://twitter.com/emmadaboutlife/status/1294936608878149632
if you get stuck, type "how to [do thing i cant do]" into duckduckgo. if that doesnt work try google. an example would be "how to avoid anti-adblock popups". then try the suggestions until something works. this is an organic process. you have to do it on your own
i have replies from people i dont follow muted due to having too many followers, so i won't see most of the questions people ask in the replies to any of these posts. and also i am extremely busy. fellow dorks, please look out for your comrades and teach them yourself
be nice to people who dont know how to do this stuff. making fun of them is fun of course but completely counterproductive. here is the thread where we're just helpful and nice to everyone
dont use uTorrent. i like Transmission as a torrent app, myself. that one with the frog logo is also no good, whats it called like fuze or ssomething https://twitter.com/filthibis/status/1294937617243336704
what IS port forwarding, you may be asking yourself while looking at a website telling you to perform a series of arcane steps in order to pirate shit. well, here you go https://twitter.com/modifiedsnakes/status/1294939330624929792
what the fuck is a "seedbox" and why do nerds keep talking about it when i mention storage issues? we join an explanatory thread already in progress https://twitter.com/beef_mcgristle/status/1294936738050138113
im going to bed, i expect to be yelled at by What About the Poor Software Companies gang within 10 hours
im sure there are already lots of good threads that explain in simple terms why mass media companies and software megacorps deserve to be pirated from and why "piracy" is ethical, generally harmless, and often beneficial to artists, please link them here
welcome
open source software is not a replacement for conventional software. torvalds crew will eventually show up with that silly “replacements for adobe suite programs” graphic, just ignore them. no one is going to hire you for graphic design work with GIMP on your resume.
there are a lot of great open source apps for stuff! many of them work well for personal projects or to replace one or two steps in your process. the majority of them will never be able to unseat established workflow in professional contexts
isn’t piracy unethical? what about supporting artists? a simple explanation https://twitter.com/videodante/status/1294943773311381504?s=21
another thing i will say is that security, piracy, and other related nerds of my type have extremely strong opinions about what is safe or unsafe or good software or bad software. you will find arguments in the replies about this stuff. that’s part of the process
people are arguing with me right now and that’s okay and many of them probably have better information than i do. this is part of how we figure shit out and learn. don’t get overwhelmed if you’re new
for ex: people object to this post because they feel used HDs will fail quickly & may have spyware on them. this is a reasonable concern. i didn’t mention it because you should ALWAYS wipe new HDs and reformat them, and because all my HDs fail within 9mos https://twitter.com/3liza/status/1294933729958170624?s=21
there’s a link to a smaller and cheaper drive with even more storage in the replies to that quoted post! we are getting good resources here out of a disagreement. always format your hard drives anyway. my HDs fail quickly for unknown reasons, i don’t drop or beat them
some replies to this post opining that you dont need a VPN to use p2p filesharing (SoulSeek is p2p, which is not torrenting). i don't know enough about it to agree or disagree, but p2p IS generally considered safer/less detectable by ISPs than torrenting https://twitter.com/3liza/status/1294932647257374722
yeah a lot of this stuff is crapshoot, and it's also tied into which particular torrents of particular properties are being monitored that week. like you'll see comments on PB that say "be careful lads, got a letter about this one" for popular/new torrents https://twitter.com/HertzEnterprise/status/1295110525886636033
i know nothing about Usenet, it is beyond my paygrade, but it's probably time to learn! https://twitter.com/random_tangent/status/1295141613870743552
look im going to just lay it out: if you are a big nerd pirate like myself, are not afraid of potentially getting in trouble, and are interested in being a Big Sibling to people who want to learn to acquire warez, RT this and i will pick some of you to form a cadre
you are right to be suspicious of posts like this so if you're not interested, completely understand
