i feel like they're botching the end of this season :/ but it's still way better than S1 imo, asylum outdoes murder house in every way.
okay so i finished asylum the day before i posted chap 3 of MJ. i do think they botched it a bit (probably just me being salty about tje way they tore up the polygamous relationship :/ ), but the VERY ending made up for it. it was so cute 
starting coven now, but i seriously doubt it'll top asylum. i'm personally not a huge fan of "monster school" stories, but that scene with the minotaur was interesting af so we'll see what's up. also jessica lange makes such a good partial-antagonist 
isn't zoe a high schooler…… why would they make her the succubus……

fiona, cordelia, and marie are all BRILLIANT characters. queenie's voodoo power and papa legba were both cool af!!!! the way they handled resurrection and immortality in the show gave it SO MUCH POTENTIAL.

first thing's first: zoe. oh my god. she's literally the most boring protagonist i've ever seen/read. i think even the worst wattpad fanfic i've ever read at LEAST painted the protag better than coven did. fucking christ.

violet was great in S1, so i seriously had high hopes for zoe!!
1) ABSURDLY PASSIVE. the only character more passive than zoe i've EVER encountered is liesel in the book thief. and that's embarrassing bc liesel was *supposed* to be passive, yet still managed to be interesting.

the very few times zoe takes action in the story rather than reacting to things or being forced to do things are when she's being a fucking moron. running outside during a zombie apocalypse with a chainsaw. playing with a ouija board after being warned several times not to. etc.
2) her power is pointless. she uses it twice -- both times in the very 1st ep and one of those times was an accident. that's it. it's never relevant again.
you could argue that her power dramatised her love story with kyle BUT that was also BS & i'll get to why in a sec.

3) zoe had no personality. none. at the times it seemed like the show would finally give her one, she did something that totally negated it. her only solid trait was crushing on kyle, which was illustrated best when the witches had to visit & return from hell.
hell in this show works on an individual basis. it's YOUR hell. misty, a nature loving witch, was forced to dissect living animals. queenie, a fat black witch, was forced to relive the lowest point in her life for the rest of eternity (involved daily racial/fatphobic insults).
do you want to know what zoe's hell was? the absolute most horrid thing she could possibly undergo? what was as traumatic for zoe as dissecting live animals was for misty?

let's talk about kyle!
kyle was a GREAT character before the whole frankenstein thing happened. fucking loved him. and even after it happened, he was still pretty interesting.
however. he was useless to the plot.

it actually makes me uncomfortable to think about because they literally turned this dude into a sex object and that's it. he's a love interest? okay. there's a weird vague threesome scene for no reason & with no consequences? alright. he got molested by his mom?--

vivien birthed a demon baby. grace had motive to kill her family & that's why she was in the asylum. bloody face's mommy issues came to light with lana. madison got pissed and flipped the bus, killing her rapists and their entire fraternity, which kicked off the story.
but there was no reason for frankenstein kyle to be molested. his mom was irrelevant, no plot came of or was contributed to by it, and the only thing it changed at all was that kyle got mad when people ~other than zoe~ touched him. the whole thing just felt fetishy.
if you were to take out that molestation scene, nothing about the story would change. if you were to take out kyle entirely, nothing would change. he was literally useless. it really just felt like AHS said "let's throw in some s/a to make people uncomfortable" and that's it.
frankly his story and character seemed promising until he got wrapped up with zoe. that whole frat thing could've really been something. instead, coven turned him into madison, zoe, and his mother's immobile sex doll.
MOVING ON. the white saviour vibes were weird as fuck. coven built the black witches vs white witches up to be an epic vendetta. the black witches were so powerful, had so much influence, knew more and were stronger than the white witches which made it so intense!
then, in one scene, some HUMAN white dude strolls in & kills basically every single black character in the season within 20 seconds. the only survivors were a living voodoo doll & an immortal. fuckin. really? and then of course they went crawling to the white witches for help :(
BS. queenie alone could've taken dude down & saved the entire coven from where she was standing. would've added more to her character & the plot! but ~no~. we need ms black witch 2 kiss up 2 ms white witch n beg forgiveness 4 centuries of feuding :( all bc of some dude w/a pistol
last but not least, nan and luke. pointless side plot overall even if i was really rooting for them, but the real bullshit was with luke's mom.
mom hates nan! then nan proves she's useful & mom likes nan :) then nan reads luke's mind & mom hates nan! then mom kills luke & she likes nan :) then nan finds out mom killed luke & nan kills mom despite having been shown the entire season as an angel! all within 1 ep. ok
it's just maddening. murder house was decent, then the sudden increase in quality with asylum just blew my expectations out of the water and i was expecting so much more… then coven was shit. i'm so disappointed.
my ranking of the seasons so far:
S2, asylum: 10/10
S1, murder house: 7/10
S3, coven: 4/10. possibly 3/10.

i haven't started S4 yet (i've heard the acting is trash + i'm afraid to be even more disappointed) but i had to add to this thread bc… i can't believe this show dangled poly relationships in my face & then tore them apart TWICE. what the fuck
i obviously couldn't give less of a fuck about zoe, madison, and kyle, but,,, grace, kit, & alma were fucking cute. DAMN
