WAYS TO ACCELERATE YOUR JOB HUNTING.

Thread..

First of all, let me begin by stating some basic principles that you should have at the back of your mind at all times. AT ALL TIMES!
1. Job hunting is never gonna get any easier, infact it gets tougher and tougher with each day that passes.

2. Getting a job is all upon you, not the government, not your parents, not your relatives, not anybody. It is entirely upon you, you can’t depend on anybody for it.
3. You have to work everyday on it until you get that job.

4. Be the most open-minded as person alive.

5. NEVER GIVE UP!

Those are the 5 basic principles to job hunting. Now here are the ways that will accelerate the process.
A) BE WILLING TO VOLUNTEER.

Before anything else, just know that in the corporate world, employers value experience more than your qualifications. And as a job seeker, you don’t have to have anything to gain experience. All you need is your time.
How do you do this? Let’s assume you just finished your course at University. Gone are the days where people would graduate and say “this course drained me, let me go rest at home a couple of months then I’ll start looking for a job.” You can’t afford to do that anymore.
You know why? Because jobs are getting more scarce than a hen’s teeth these days. And if you think that situation will get any better, you’re fooling yourself. The more time you spend without building yourself, you’re practically putting 10,000+ people ahead of you in the line.
Like I said earlier, you need to gain experience. One good thing about experience is that, whether you gain it getting paid or not getting paid, ITS STILL EXPERIENCE! I know that people are always looking at the government internship for that, but let’s face reality..
The queue at the internship offices grows longer by the day, and you just can’t wait for that. So what do you do? Identify companies and organizations whose line of work is similar to your qualifications. Find a day, wake up, dress neat and well then walk up to their reception.
This line is all you need, “Good morning. My name is Kenneth, I just graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health. I came here to ask if there is a possibility that I can volunteer to work with the company in the mean time, to build my experience while I look for a job”.
Trust me, no company will say no to that. You know why?
1. No one can say no to free labor (but that’s not your concern right now)
2. Your spirit alone (to build yourself) will make any employer to want to work with you.
3. You won’t be costing them anything.
But your focus is bigger than all those. Your focus is to gain more experience. Being concerned about giving someone free labor will only disadvantage you. On top of that, let me tell you how beneficial volunteering can also be to you.
1. I already mentioned the experience you’ll be gaining.
2. Companies/organizations buy newspapers every week for their employers to read. That’s free information for you, and you can always browse for job adverts there. You don’t spend a penny.
3. You use their internet to do your stuff. Do not do that during working hours though, as you might upset the employer. Stay about an hour or 2 after working hours to browse the Internet and do a bit of homework. Even during lunch, use that time.
4. You can use their resources to print, photocopy, scan and even use their mailbox as your address.

But of course you have to talk to your supervisor about this, let him/her understand that you’re job hunting. So that they don’t later accuse you of misusing company resources
5. Who knows, a post might come up within that company and guess who they’ll consider first. You, because you’ve been there, you know the work flow in the company, and you have impressed them with your attitude, your work ethic and charisma (be a fun person to have in the team).
All you need to volunteer is transport fare to and from the workplace (if you can’t walk). You can always ask your parents or anyone in your family to assist you with that. Then pack your lunch everyday. That’s all you need.
You might even find that one of the employees at that company lives near your hood and can always be kind to give you a lift to and from work. That way you save your transport fare.
Mind you, the assumption is that before you go ask to volunteer anywhere, you have already submitted your name at the Internship Offices so that as their queue keeps pushing, you’re busy building your experience, not waiting for them. If and when they call, should a bonus to you.
If you have attended an interview in the past and you hve a gap year(s) in your CV [year(s) in which you weren’t doing anything],I’m very sure the interviewers asked you “Mr Kenneth,I see that your last job ended in 2018,do u mind telling us what you’ve been doing the past 2yrs?
You know why they ask? Because no employer wants to hire someone they’re gonna have to spend weeks and money trying to refresh their mind. They want to hire someone who will catch up to speed immediately, someone whose mind is ready to work. Time is money in business.
And trust me, if your competitor in the interviews has been more active than you, there’s a 99% chance they’re choosing that person ahead of you. If you graduate and you go stay home, you’re only shooting yourself in the foot. Other people are out there searching.
For my fellow young men and women who are still pursuing their tertiary courses, the companies you go to for your attachments, build a good relationship with them and leave a positive impression there. Those are your first point of contact after you finish school. They know you.
I’ve seen attachees who are just too bad for any employer’s liking. They miss work, they come late, go to work drunk, don’t dress properly, and they don’t know how to talk to people. When you finish school and life hits you, you’ll try to go back to them for work.
You know what they’ll do? They’ll just tell you “sorry we don’t have any opening for now”, with a smile. Even if there is an opening, but because of the impression you left while attached there, they don’t want you.
So that is it with Volunteering. All you need is transport fare every week, your lunch pack (because companies usually have free tea and coffee). Just look for that company/organization that matches your career line, go ask to volunteer and start building yourself.
Mind you, while doing all this, you’re busy applying for job adverts that your come across. You may even get to attend conferences and corporate meetings where you volunteered. Some will be kind enough to offer you training. That’s you building your CV.
In about 6months or so, you will be planets and planets ahead of thousands of people. You will have significantly reduced competition in the job hunting market. So let me repeat this,

IN TODAY’S TIMES, YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO SPEND A DAY DOING NOTHING.
That’s it for today. I’ll share again tomorrow, the second strategy you can use to accelerate your job hunting. Have a good day! ✌🏿
