Reading around the #BACP #SCoPEd project. Some thoughts. I dont like the Counsellor, Advanced Counsellor & Psychotherapist labels. I dont ask my GP whether she is a GP or an advanced GP. I trust that her qualification makes her good enough. 1/ #therapistsconnect #therapists
I also think we should be refocusing the discussion around being "ready" for private practice once qualified. Many trainee counsellors are working in placements which have found them working with complex mental health as its not always found during assessment. I worked 2/
I worked within an NHS GP setting during my first placement and within a Rape Crisis organisation. Many of my clients struggled with complex mental health and I know that I was "good enough". On qualifying I started my own practice supporting young autistic clients & their..3/
..families. Could we consider updating mandatory counselling training to include "the business of counselling". Training could prepare us to know how to work privately & to confidently start our own practices ethically & safely with good supervision in place. Lets prepare.. 4/
..counsellors to know their true value & worth. To charge properly & not be conditioned through training to work for free forever. Counselling as a whole needs to be a protected title but lets not confuse the public with titles such as "counsellor" & "advanced counsellor". 5/
We are all GOOD ENOUGH trainees and good enough qualified counsellors once qualified!
