The thing that interests me the most about Ugandans is their attitude towards the health system .Its a case of it doesn't affect me or one of my own ,I don't care to be bothered .
As a doctor that has worked upcountry ,where your kaakas, jjajas, totos, kukus are ,it's a case of doctors performing magic .The art of using nothing to achieve something .
You get to learn new inguinal hernia classifications ;mid thigh ,at knee ,below knee .These old men of course wouldn't want to move around like this ,but there's no doctor and where there's a doctor there are no sutures .
The stories are many I tell you ,the life saving surgeries you do ,holding up a woman's uterus and knowing you're the only thing keeping her from bleeding out .The PEP and more PEP.
It's hard being a health worker ,but you give your all but it's only so much that you can do .When you complain as UMA did with IA,the same people whose grannies you look after will lecture self sacrifice .
And so the toiling continues ,you have passion but little to work with ,you look at your patients, knowing how to solve their problems but your hands are tied .
Dear Ugandans ,just because you can go to IHK or any other private hospital doesn't mean you should be out of touch of the plight of people that have to go to Itojo hospital .
When doctors and other health workers stand up to raise very pertinent issues ,don't brush them off coz they don't affect you ,listen ,learn and support .
I summarize by saying COVID 19 is going to show all Ugandans rich and poor ,that health services should be uniformly available to all .Watch the space ......
