THREAD on how City can potentially beat Bayern —
As we saw against Madrid, Pep displayed a 4-3-3 without possession and 4-4-2 diamond in possession . Which disrupted Madrid’s build up massively.
Bayern line up in a 4-2-3-1, becoming a 3-3-3-1 during the build-up as Thiago drops down between the centerbacks —-
— the fullbacks (Davies and Kimmich) push high up the pitch, and Goretzka sits in midfield. Against Madrid, Pep had Foden sit on Casemiro, and Jesus and Sterling sit on the fullbacks, and as soon Courtouis passed it out to either Varane or Militiao —-
— Gab Jesus and Sterling presses the CB that had received the ball from the outside and in, using their cover shadow to remove Carvajal and Mendy as passing options, while Foden left Casemiro and pressed the ball holder straight on ——
—- as he cover shadowed Casemiro, which meant that Real often lost possession in dangerous areas of the pitch, and that led to one of the goals. City need to do the same against Bayern, having Foden/Bernado Silva as a false 9 and mark Thiago (Bayern’s maim progresser) —-
—- while Sterling and Gab Jesus force Boateng and Alaba on the inside and Alaba on his right foot. Goretzka can easily be taken out the build-up to by City’s midfield three, while they are wary of the long ball from Neuer to the full backs. —-
—- in possession and on the break, Coty should look to expose the flanks, like Barca did with the same 4-4-2 diamond and split strikers shape. They can easily do that by Jesus, and Sterling pulling wide, while pushing their full backs high, and low crossing/cutbacks ——
— so if City do that, I got them going through and winning the whole thing. Bayern are the best team in world football currently, but they aren’t invincible ——
