Actual issues of fetishization and homophobia in fandom:
- Perception of queer sexual content as being more obscene, making it more subject to censorship and social stigma and limiting business opportunities

Not an issue:
- Straight people writing/drawing smut of a gay ship
Actual issues: gay couples at conventions or in photos having inappropriate comments/questions/requests thrown at them, especially invasive questions abt their sex life

Not an actual issue: sexual comments about fictional characters
Actual issues: cishetetonormativity leading to people seeing having all gay ships as unusual and perverted while having all straight ships is unremarkable

not actual issues: having all gay ships regardless of your sexuality
actual issues: lack of queer representation in mainstream media and places where it’s difficult or unsafe to come out leading to many people learning about queer sexuality exclusively from porn

not actual issues: the existence of gay porn
actual issues: queer people being treated like porn categories and objectified, esp by those who say “I like gay [etc.] people” when what they mean is “I like gay porn”

not actual issues: people watching gay porn
Homophobia is a cultural attitude, and while it may sometimes manifest in fiction, fiction is not the cause. Porn & smut are not the causes of queer sexuality being seen as more sexual and obscene and attacking fiction won’t improve homophobia.
