Following yesterday's worrying discussion around mental health providers, I have a few stats to help us have an educated guess as to why it is the way it is.
1 in 4 Kenyans have or will have a form of mental health condition in their lives.
That's 11.5M people.
And they are served by only 88 Psychiatrists and 427 psychiatric nurses. Stats on psychologists are still unclear but the gist is they aren't enough either.
Budgetary allocation for mental health is 0.5% of the total health budget as well.
So in short, we aren't doing too good here 😑
I can imagine that the really big guns are already overbooked as it is.
Which follows, a sub-standard quality of service and even outright profiteering.
Taking advantage of people in such a vulnerable moment is callous yeesh.
For now, now we know.
As with all things health and Kenyan, this is another aspect that really needs improvement.
And with this one, a serious push in distigmatizing as well.
Thanks for all that you shared on this topic.
Stories are great reminders that we have much in common and that we can help each other.
Don't stop sharing and making it normal to not always be okay.
One way or another, we'll figure it out.
