Just thought I'd share some thoughts on numbers, primarily 0.89.
There's one thing found missing from most international comparisons.

You know, the USA vs Belgium or UK vs Mexico type of ones, where people try to make sense of how their individual countries are doing.

What's missing is this is ultimately Covid19 vs humanity.
157,000 US deaths is statistically better per capita than Belgium's 9,800 dead.

If you're inclined to want to bash Sophie Wilmès or defend Donald, there's a peachy stat to do either one.

166,800 funerals, on a big lump of rock we call Earth.

There's your "better" and "worse".
UK's 46,000 deaths is worse per capita than Mexico's 46,000 dead.

Tears roll the same way in Mexico as they do in the UK, from peoples heart through their eyes.

Saying goodbye to someone who meant the world to you doesn't get any easier by your location.
Mexico's deaths per million at the moment is 361.89.

You'll see that reported as 362 on most tracking websites.

There is no such thing as 0.89 of a person, yet we often reduce the totality of human experience, decades of memories, into a denominator in a maths equation.
Human beings are not fractions.

We are fishermen who can't sit idly-by at home while 2 scared young girls are adrift at sea trying to stay alive.

We are 16-year-olds who risk their life to save a drowning child.

Empathy and love underpins the bravery to do what they did.
We're actually doing "better" than UK on healthcare worker deaths. 8 vs 600.

There's supposedly something better about 600 heroes dying 200 miles away.

The same level of empathy and love Dr. Ali had in his heart in Dublin, was just as present in doctors in Cardiff and London.
That's what is behind all of these statistics.

A person full of love, who meant something to many.

And meant everything to some.

We throw stats around so casually, it becomes so easy to forget there's a broken heart behind every one of those numbers.
There have been countless acts of charity and solidarity from countries to other countries during this pandemic.

And countless acts of kindness between people.

The type of kindness I've experienced myself lately. Thank you.
The pandemic has resulted in billions of those acts of kindness.

Covid19 is testing us, and we've stood up to it, while keeping our humanity.

Make comparisons, if they help to make sense of the world.

Just remember that 0.89 represents people who were loved.
