There are some things we need to clarify about what it is to #DisruptTexts.

This is NOT about simply replacing texts. It was never about that. It was never *only* about the how. It's always been about the why, when, where, AND how.
What we mean is, if you look at your curriculum & notice it's whitewashed & change out one or two, even all the books, for ones that r #ownvoices (for example) but u haven't done any of the internal work (Pillar 1) and u didn't center those voices meaningfully (Pillar 2), well...
And you didn't teach those texts in holistic, critical, and antiracist ways (Pillar 3)...and you didn't consider your school's community, your professional community, and the work doesn't go beyond your classroom (Pillar 4), then guess what?
You might be (probably are) doing more harm than good and THAT IS NOT #DISRUPTTEXTS.

Please don't minimize our work or what we stand for as a simple exchange of titles for the sake of "representation." Teaching isn't just about the books you choose.
Please respect our message, our approach, our words, our scholarship and when you talk about #DisruptTexts, say it right.

This was never about book lists. Have you noticed that in the midst of all these book lists since March, you ain't seen one from us?
This is not bc of a lack of time, interest, or ability. Our work is not about replacing texts. Do we encourage teachers to replace racist, harmful texts? ABSOLUTELY. Can you teach a great text and still have a harmful impact? Yep. So, the work is complex and must be holistic.
If you can, join us next week as we keynote (four different keynotes) during the Alberta, Canada conference. We gon break it all the way down. Thank you for the love and keep rollin' with us.
