Wednesday afternoon a man died in the park across the street from my office. Not sure but all indications suggest OD. His buddy, a young First Nations man, woke up & was immediately in distress. I watched from my office as VPD threw him to the ground, put a knee in his back../2
and handcuffed him. Left my office to witness. His friends begged him to cooperate, which was maybe the most stressful part of being there - knowing we all knew what might happen if he didn’t. A crowd gathered & eventually they let him go. He took off up Main with me asking../3
Someone to please care for him. This morning a woman, born in the 80s with pale orange hair and a messy bun and wearing a jean jacket and a cute little sundress died in a vestibule in the building where I live. She didn’t look homeless and I was able to find out from the VPD../4
that she had an out-of-town address. I know her name but am not sure if her family knows she’s gone. Our building caretaker found her & collapsed in my arms when I got there, sobbing. She tried to revive her but was too late. She had been gone for 6-8 hours. Caretaker still../5
couldn’t help feeling like she could’ve/should’ve done more. These are not critical incident reports I am reading. These are people’s families dying on the streets. I am caught somewhere between exhausted, profoundly sad and fucking angry. #SafeSupply #Decrim @JustinTrudeau ../6
