A thread about WHY you should sign up for Speech and Debate at school (and what it is, from what I remember):
Speech and debate class: Teaches the basics of critical thinking through written and oral communication.
Competitive Speech and Debate: On weekends, your school team goes to tournaments to compete with other students on the events/performances youâve prepared.

In tournaments, I think of them as 3 types of events you can compete in (they may differ from region to region/may have changed overtime.)
1. Interpretive events where youâre acting with some creative challenges
2. Presenting speeches (some prepared, some impromptu)
3. Debate

Now... WHY EVERYONE SHOULD SIGN UP FOR SPEECH AND DEBATE:
1. Confidence in oral communication & written communication.
These classes teach you how to think critically, best organize, analyze and communicate your thoughts. AND then gets you practice practice practice.

Of course RN, Iâm just kind of rambling... ANYWAY:
2. How to debate fairly and coherently! Movies, media and our personal environment arenât the best examples when it comes to fair, logical and non-manipulative debates/arguments.

Debate teaches how to critically look at others arguments as well as your own.
3. How to take and give criticism! Boy is this one tough to learn, and is a constant place of learning. However, through the class and competitions, youâre judged by peers and others...

Which sounds really scary! But itâs a place where you learn the difference between positive, useful feedback (and how to work on them) & notes that donât seem to apply. Also, if youâre looking to enter any professional setting, learning to take feedback/work on it = very valuable

At first, I didnât want to sign up but when I did... I went to High School Nationals (once or twice? Canât remember), recieved a full ride scholarship to my community college (bc I wasnât ready for a 4-year college just yet) & was a Novice National Championship my freshman year.
I think thatâs it for my mess of a thread - but YOU SHOULD DO IT! Especially if itâs something that scares you, because communication is a skill that everyone should practice to the best of their abilities.
Then after that, sign up for improv.

If you have social anxiety/shy/scared - THIS IS WHY YOU TAKE THE CLASS!
It literally gives you THE BEST tools to communicate! In a safe space! It takes the guess work out of all of it and challenges you!
You can do it!
