Aug 14, 2009: a new underpass opens beneath the Union Station Rail Corridor, linking Simcoe Street with Lower Simcoe. The street had originally extended south of Front Street to the Esplanade around 1858, when the harbour was filled in. 1/3
With the building of the railway viaduct in the 1920s, Simcoe Street was cut off at Station Street, north of the tracks. Along with the closing of the John Street bridge, the rail viaduct blocked through roads for almost one kilometre between York Street and Spadina Avenue. 2/3
In the 1990s, the city built a new street called Lower Simcoe between the newly-created Bremner Boulevard and Queen's Quay. On August 6, 2009, Toronto City Council approved the renaming of the short section of Simcoe between Front and Station Streets to Lower Simcoe Street. 3/3
