Tldr version of why I think Jimin is the most versatile dancer in BTS:
- he has training in both hip hop and contemporary, two very different styles
- hip hop allows him to pop/lock/isolate, which he is very skilled at (you can see this in most times he dances - here in the beginning of lie, similar to Hobi's part in 3J) +
- I would argue he is just as skilled with Hobi in some of these things. Hobi is better at freestyling in hip hop, but Jimin still has the body control and ability to dance the style extremely well. I think a lot of people like to ignore this and box him in as one type of dancer+
- He and Hobi do dance differently in their hip hop, but I think that makes them unique and have their own style. Neither way is necessarily better than the other, just different in terms of what you like! +
- Jimin has AMAZING knowledge and control of his body. You can see this in his consistently gorgeous lines and extensions, body rolls, and how he uses his space. He always follows each move through to completion, which is difficult (see how his head does the full movement) +
- I think his true versatility comes from contemporary. (See his line here?!) All have the boys have trained in hip hop from their time as idols, but contemp/lyrical is very different and more technical in terms of its relation to ballet. From this, Jimin has a certain fluidity +
in movement which he uses with his hip hop knowledge, creating a contrasting, yet lovely effect of stop-go-stop-go that he transitions effortlessly between. I think Black Swan was a great showcase of that and a lovely way to show his talent. +
- He is insanely flexible, allowing him to pull off cool tricks like my favorite reverse illusion where he uses his splits (I cried)! Also notice again now he follows the movement all the way through, sticking the landing and immediately bouncing back +
- note: do not mistake flexibility for strength!! sometimes I see a lot of ppl talking about his flexibility for something it doesn't really apply to, like the matrix-like hinge or the jazz split everyone was talking about today in Fake Love. he's SUPER bendy but imo those +
relate more to..
- his hella core strength! This can be seen in the MAMA 2018 Fake Love stage when he gets throws, his ability to turn, his ability to hinge (matrix move), his jumping, etc (also leg strength too). This arch up right here is BOTH back flex & core strength +
- Most of all, I really find he is fearless when he dances and has extreme confidence in himself and his body to be able to do what he wants it to do. See his aerials, butterfly kicks, jazz split drops, jumps, anything really! He's not afraid, so he commits 100% and is amazing!
- Hobi has a lot of these things too, for sure! But he doesn't have the contemporary experience and technique that Jimin has, which greatly affects his dancing and opens up a whole new world, and so I ultimately think it makes him the most versatile dancer. +
- is he a perfect dancer? No. He doesn't point his toes (likely bc they always wear dress/gym shoes), his legs aren't always straight. But I don't even care! His lines, strength, passion, power, musicality, body control, etc surpass all for me +
* This is just my opinion! I can likely expand on each of these, and I'm not saying he's the /best/ dancer in bts, although he is my favorite. I'm not a professional but have 19 years of dance exp and wanted to share my love for him and his talents. ALL of the boys are amazing +
dancers and should ALL be appreciated!! Jimin is just special to me and I think has a little extra something wonderful when it comes to his versatility and skills 💜 thank you for reading and please appreciate this lovely c-jump by Jin!!
