Assalamualaikum/hey!

Have you ever cracked open an egg to find “blood” in it? If you use brown eggs, it’s probably happened more often than white eggs. What is it?⠀

And, what do you do then? ⠀
Do you eat it? Remove it?⠀
Is it halal?⠀

These dark spots actually happen because of vessel rupture in the development of the egg inside the hen. They are not an indication of fertilization, that’s a misconception. They’re not harmful or problematic.

They occur in both white and brown eggs but we see them more often in brown eggs. This is because 1) they occur slightly more often in brown eggs but also 2) they are harder to catch in brown eggs.

Mass produced eggs go through a process called candling, where a light is shone thru the egg to catch the spots. It’s harder to catch the tiny spots in brown eggs because of the darker shell. ⠀

Per my research, although the consumption of blood is haram; a drop or two is معفي عنه, which means it is “overlooked”. It’s too small and so not a concern. If the whole egg had spots, it may be a different story.

PS. Halal means something that is allowed in Islam. Most food is halal unless it has been specifically identified as not allowed. Some of these items are flowing blood, alcohol, pork products.

Primary exception to the rule of food is halal, is animal meat since you are taking the life of a living being, there are steps that must be taken to ensure it is done in a manner that makes them halal as life is sacred. If you have any Qs about halal, please let me know!
