Bromance, a Taiwanese drama on Netflix, is equal parts adorable & cheesy. The subplots are way over the top. The show goes all out for every amount of drama that it can. But the characters are sincere & sweet to each other in a way that is totally heartwarming. Also queer.
Spoilers! The show starts as the typical ‘girl has to live disguised as a boy’ series. But instead of characters figuring out early on that Yanou is a bio-fem, the main love interest Zifeng pretty quickly decides he loves Yanou no matter what gender & he’s ok being gay.
Yanou says several times that gender does not matter to them. They do not care whether they live as a boy or a girl, & they prefer masculine styles. The couple is endearingly cute throughout the series while presenting as a gay couple.
It’s really nice to see one of these kinds of series where the main character isn’t super caught up on gender roles. Also the actress is very androgynous and looks sooo good in suits.
Finale spoilers for anyone worried about how it may turn out.
In the end, once it is revealed that Yanou is AFAB, it’s really not a big deal to anyone. There’s no time skip where she gets long hair and suddenly looks super feminine. Instead, she just wears a little bit of rye make up now and keeps dressing masculine.
At the couple’s wedding, Yanou wears a wedding dress for a portion of the ceremony then changes into a tux for wedding photos because, as everyone agreed, she looks real good in a tux.
In summation, watch Bromance if you like Asian dramas and queer representation. Again, it’s very cheesy and dramatic, but the characters are total sweethearts.
Plus there’s a side couple love confession that involves this hot dog, which is absolutely the way I would want to be confessed to.
