I've interviewed for tech roles at over 20 companies including Amex, Grammarly, Spirit Airlines, SambaTV, Walt Disney World, Visa, and Netflix. Here are the reasons why you aren't passing the interview—
1. There was a misalignment between your skills (or passion) and the role.
2. Your resume did not accurately reflect the breadth of your understanding of certain topics.
3. You got defensive when given critical feedback.
4. You became flustered when unable to answer a question.
5. You didn't tell a cohesive story about how your past experience ties into this role.
6. You didn't conduct a deep dive into the company to gather inquisitive questions (or show your tenacity).
7. You gave lengthy answers which may not have answered the original question.
8. You didn't engage the interviewer or speak through your problem-solving strategy aloud.
9. You didn't prepare for soft skill questions like building relationships, communication, or business applications.
10. You were not prepared technically. (If all else fails, lean on what you do know.)
11. You started interviewing your interviewer! Don't question the knowledge of your interviewer—they have a job
12. You aren't showing your humanity; your personality is what will make you memorable.
